Somalia make WCP history

Somalia were the first team in WCP history to NOT SHOW UP to a game. They did not notify anyone that there wasnt going to be a game. ES had players from Saskatoon come down what a waste of their time. Also a huge let down for the fans that paid to come see a game. What do you think the punishment should be? I'm just curious in hearing your thoughts on this. - DB

They should be fined. Very unprofessional, just like their gameplay.

I would ban the team and every registered player from competing in wcp for at least 3 years. Especially for not notifying anyone. How brutal for the Saskatoon guys. It's bad enough driving there to actually play a brutal team like that, never mind driving there to play nobody.

All I can say is WOW!

It will be interesting to see what they give ES for a win, as they needed to crush them to really have any chance to advance I would imagine.

I will agree with banning Somalia from putting a team in. I'd also ban there roster for at least a year so they can't play for anyone else. Would love to hear someone from Somalia'a point of view.

Without a doubt Somalia should be terminated from the tournament and be declined entry into the tournament in the future. In this day and age, every person has a cell phone, it's not very difficult to make a simple phone call to inform someone that you will not be attending.
People spend alot of time and money organizing for this, and players travel in from out of town to play. Not showing up for a game is a disgrace and a slap in the face to tournament organizers and can not be tolerated. The WCP jury has to put their foot down and set an example that this is not acceptable. Smack them with a heavy fine and maybe have them provide personel to help clean up the event that obviously they do not care to be a part of.

I heard theyre replaying every single game from Group A as a 4 team group

ahahha, I dont think thats possible Cam, good try though

they were 3 of them that did show up...should they be banned?

I dont think those 3 should but it is pretty bad

The organizers should do one of two things ...
1. Award ES a win of 1-0 over Somalia.
2. Ignore all games involving Somalia in respect to A group standings.

I'd prefer #2 because #1 hurts ES (i.e. they surely would have scored more than 1 goal).

Ban Somalia for 3 to 5 years but leave the individual players to do what they want. But the # of years really doesn't matter, I doubt they will want to try again.

Kudos to last year's Vietnam. Their struggles were at the same level as Somalia (or even worse, they gave up tons of goals). But Vietnam showed up to all their games and played honorably.

I like the idea of discounting all games against Somalia to determine group A standings... give each team the points for the win without affecting goal diff.

Can't imagine Somalia will try to enter a team again but without banning the entire roster it would be easy for players to play elsewhere or even start a new team under a different country. Did anyone speak to the few players who did show up? Did they have an explanation or even know the rest of their team wasn't coming?

It will be interesting to see what kind of precedent is set.

ya that makes sense, disgard all games and forfeit them at 1-0

Anon. 9:48 - Spot on with your #2 option. And I agree that a team ban should be implemented. Banning individual players seens unfair to those who did show up, and for those who had legitimate reasons not to attend. With all due respect, I don't think teams will be lining up to sign their players in future years, so I really don't see the potential of them playing with other teams as problematic.

Making a mockery of the tournament - like openly drinking before games. Classless.

Ignoring the games against somalia is really the only way to do it. It will cut down France and Sudan's goal differentials but(assuming Sudan beats Italy) ES would have had to go around +14 goals against Somalia and beat France- which was an unrealistic task anyway. If they would have played Sudan alot tighter, then this might be an issue but now their hopes are very slim.

If you're advocating Somalia to be banned for 3-5 years for not showing up, shouldn't a similar penalty be given to Ireland for showing up drunk and making a mockery of the bronze medal?

what happend last year is last year, let it go. the talk here is about somalia not showing up, not about ireland never forfeiting a game.
I agree with the point about deleting all games played against somalia. It's the only fair way to do it, and the group should be based off of the teams that actually show up for games and play against each other. Somalia not only created problems by not showing up for a game, but they embarassed themselves by entering this tournament and will forever be a stain. We will no longer use the word embarassing, but the word somalia instead. here is a sentence that explains:
" France really somalia'd Somalia in the wcp cup this year "

I think Somalia and their players should be banned for eternity. Did they even fulfill the heritage requirements? #ithinknot

My suggestion: Ban the team for 1 year and ban the players who didn't show up for the same. It's not fair to the ones who did show and to future talented Somalian immigrants to be unable to compete for their country down the road just because some other guys didn't compete honourably to the end.

Also, I hope people (following the lead of Anon 9:48) recognize the value of some of the lesser teams in this tournament who do play honourably. There has been lots of arrogant statements in the past criticizing the skill of certain teams and saying that this is reason not to let them play. I think now we see what we want to eliminate - dishonourable play is 100 times worse than unskilled play! My hats off to the teams who play their hearts out, compete to the end yet don't achieve as much as they had hoped...your presence adds value to our tournament! Retool for next year and come back stronger!

Maybe every single member of somalia got stuck on the way there, these roads certainly make that a realistic possibility

I do agree with some sort of ban however I think banning the Somalia team dosent do much besides stop some other Somalia Heritage people from putting a different team in. I think it should be a individual ban for each player that did not show up. I'll leave the length of time up to the discipline committee.

So....just out of curiosity....if the team wasn't interested in showing for this game because they are getting killed (as some suggest), do we really need to ban them? What are the odds of them even registering next year? Fine them. If its not played no one on their roster can play until its paid.

Anonymous said...

even if ES played Somalia they still wouldn't have a chance of getting out of that group.

Anonymous said...

I'm curious, was there ever a set rule for what the score would be if a team forfeits a game? Do you guys think it's fair if say its 1-0? What if ES scored 10 goals and it was 10-0. Not fair for their overall +/-.

Another thing to note is if Somalia get fined or they get banned, they can just create a team with another name like all these African teams do each year. New name, same group of players. I doubt that will do anything. You would have to tighten up the heritage rules for this to even work.

Anonymous said...

i'm quite offended by anon 17:23 statement " they can just create a team with another name like all these African teams do each year", retrace your statement, instead of generalizing why can you name the countries instead of painting all of us bad. Plus your statement is completely wrong.

i think not showing up to this "non" professional tournament is not a big deal. calm down, maybe they were sick of the people saying they shouldnt have a team in the tournament in the first place!

Ireland being drunk is way worse!

banning from 3-5 years hahahaha.

Anonymous said...

All the players registered for this team for 2013 Wcp Cup should be banned for 1 year.

Somalia is banned for life. Those are the rumors going around. True or not, I'm not sure. Ireland should be banned as well for their disgraceful drunken performances and awful showing at the tournament this year. A huge disgrace. Update the power rankings and drop Ireland a few more spots.

Anonymous said...

Oh look it is the same anonymous guy posting again. Surprise, surprise. Yes SOME of the ROI players were too drunk for their own good last year during one game, but still there was a game and the result was a close one. Somalia didn't show up and didn't notify anyone, how can you compare the two?

Maybe SOME of the ROI players should have not gotten so drunk, but there are countless amounts of players that play games in the tournament who have enjoyed a drink or two prior to their match as this is a RECREATIONAL EVENT.

Say what you will about ROI, but we made it through to the quarters while "powerhouse" teams like Laos and Canada are on the outside looking in. A team like Nigeria stumbled and lost to Hungary and Hungary lost to Canada... so really anything can happen on any given night, but to please you I think that ROI deserves to be 23 on the power rankings as that would be justified.

somalia players should be banned for life (just like ROI), unless they are good enuf to make jamaica, then they can play there.

Anonymous said...

Does anyone else think this is good enough reason to have a 2nd Tier demotion/promotion process in place? I heard a lot of talk about it last year because of all the blow-outs.

Anonymous said...

Julio you fools made it to the quarters because you played absolutely horrendous teams. Look at how weak what pool was. Man up, and admit your team is crap. You wouldn't qualify in any other pool. It's just luck of the draw. Talk when you get your facts straight. You are a little wiener, who needs to post on a blog to get recognized ha ha ha ha! Lame!!!!!!!!

republic of ireland is the most hated team in the tournament

no one likes them

no one cheers for them

every player on that team is hated

mooney - most hated
julio - second most hated
riggs - third most hated
reis - forth most hated

Anonymous said...

Anon: 15:11 switch Mooney with Julio and your list above is spot on.

If you ban Somalia for failing to come to a game, then you need to also ban teams for drinking prior to games. It's not safe. It's reckless.

How many people need to get hurt for the wcp cup committee to figure out this is not acceptable? I'm getting sick of this tournament. I'm getting sick of studs up tackles, and two foot tackles. They are in every game. The worst tackler in the tournament is Aleks Wosik on Poland. Makes me sick. I saw that young boy on Greece get destroyed a few times too. It makes me sick.
