Quarterfinal Previews

France vs Nigeria

France come in to this game having pretty much had their way with every team they've played. France are the strongest team I have seen so far. They have the most depth and are all around solid. Nigeria seem to have peaked against Canada and have looked less impressive since them. Allowing 6 goals against Hungary does not look good on a resume. Not saying they don't have a chance to win but where France has depth Nigeria does not. Ultimately I believe France will expose some of Nigeria's weaknesses, specifically in the back. 4-1 France.

Afghanistan vs Serbia

I still don't exactly comprehend how Serbia made it into this position. Except for Darko scoring some goals I really haven't seen a lot that has impressed me from them. Really if they are in a different pool they are not in the knockout stages.  Afghanistan on the other hand have come out of a very tough Group B. Afghan look solid through their U of S midfield as well as their very solid goalkeeping from Diakiw. I would say Afghans one weakness is they are very reliant on Josip scoring if he can be shut down they may be in trouble. However, I don't see Serbia being able to do this. 5-2 Afghan.

Jamaica vs ROI

It is widely rumoured that I will throw this game so I should be able to tell you exactly how this will play out. Jamaica doesn't have a lot of depth. They have relied heavily on Mike and Dave to score most their goals and that will be tough to do against ROI. They will need some other players to step up. Defensively though Jamaica has been much stronger than even I expected. ROI will counter Dave and Mike with Dwayne and S Pat. That is going to make Mike and Dave job much, much tougher than it has been so far. ROI has enough fire power to score with any team it's just a matter of whether their keeper can make some saves. I think he will be able too. ROI 4-3. Lee doesn't get spanked.

Poland vs Sudan

This is the game that I am most excited for. After getting blown out by France, Sudan have looked much more like the team that won the tournament last year. Most if not all of their top players have returned and they looked poised to make another run. Coming into this tournament I predicted that Poland would have trouble scoring goals. They have. What I didn't count on was how well they have played defensively. They have worked as solidly as a unit as any team in the tournament and Michal has stood on his head. This one is tough for me to call as Poland keep proving me wrong and Sudan have looked like monsters since the 1st game. This really is tough.... ummmmm....... 2-1 Sudan... no Poland.... no Sudan. Geez....

ROI Serbia Poland and Nigeria all don't stand a chance. We may as well have gone straight to semis with the others as groups c and d were a complete joke. The top 8 teams should be seeded next year.

ROI sucks... theres no way they will beat Jamaica. Anyone good from them are now on Jamaica

With Collins free kicks and lee and Julio giving away free kicks all over Jamaica will score a lot not to mention browns finishing

Alright lads, I am back and excited for tonight. Although I may not remember the rest of the evening as I plan on having a few drinks, I think tonight has a lot of potential to be a great night.

I really think Scotland deserved to win Group D but we didn't and now Serbia has a chance to prove that they are for real. Below are my predictions.

France vs Nigeria (4-2 France)
Poland vs Sudan (3-1 Sudan)
Jamaica vs ROI (4-3 ROI)
Laos vs Scotland (8-1 Scotland) This should have been the game that happened tonight instead we get Afghan vs Serbia (4-1 Afghan)

Anonymous said...

The top 8 teams forsure should be seeded, every team in the draw should be thrown into a pot, 1-4,4-8,8-20+

I wonder if the WCP would consider doing a round of 16? we had one night (this friday) with no games, why not have a round of 16?

Anonymous said...

An intriguing match we got tonight ROI v Black ROI

but in reality its ROI v Northern Ireland

N.I will win 3-2

Anonymous said...

For ROI to win tonight the following needs to happen:

1. Reis gotta move his ass instead of just standing there waiting for the ball to be given to him.

2. 3 in the back so their so their keeper is not left hanging to fend for himself.

3. Switch back keeper, the first one is alot stronger, good with ball. If they are playing 3 defenders back that should help.

4. If a player(s) is not doing shit all on the field sub them off. Their popularity isn't going to win them this game.

5. Spank Mooney in the arse!

Anonymous said...

I really think Reis should move to the wing and let Alvi roam up high. In my opinion Alvi is the best post up striker in the province. He holds up the ball better than David, but David has a better knack for scoring goals. Reis doesn't know how to position his feet and body to receive the ball properly and Alvi is a handful upfront.

i hope that last comment was a joke

Alvi is a handful to talk too.

Remember when Serbia destroyed ROI but lost to Scotland? What does that show you about ROI. Weak bunch of losers. They suck. Losers will always be losers. Go drink some more beers you trolls.

Darko is only in the running for the golden boot because he scored 4weak goals against the hyped up Columbia who have no defense at all. All he did is stand there, receive the ball and shoot. Anyone with remotely a small soccer sense could have scored any one of those goals. Look at Portugal, duds like Justin Freitas are scoring goals. This tournament is a recreational joke. Step it up.

Anonymous said...

i think Jamaica did themselves really bad cos now they are being disrespected for having some (*former ROI)players on their team. Look at how pips think that ROI will be playing against ROI,i understand the impact of having those players but the fact it is Team Jamaica.

ROI would win tonight if Alfie had have recruited me.

Excellent hash tag but this isn't Twitter, its a blog. Indeed you guys are correct, fools will be fools and you keep proving that over and over by your posts. No one even has to reply to you now and you keep looking stupid.

I can post with my name behind it and I don't have to pump my tires about how good or not good I am. Why don't you come down to the Saskatoon league and see if I am any good or not? Posting up is not hard at all and as according to this blog I am the worst player of all time, but how is it that I can manage to turn defenders still? So does that mean the defenders are that bad because for someone to be the worst there is nothing below that.

As for Super Dud Matt Leung; sorry bud I don't even know who you are let alone have wasted my time speaking to you. I guess you've probably fantasized me talking to you and have lost touch with reality.

I don't know who is posting as me, but my name is not Math Leung, it's Matt Leung. I don't like Julio and I've voiced that openly, and I never will. I don't agree with the comments he makes. Most of his comments get people rattled and upset. I don't condone anything he says and I don't care. Stop posting comments as me. Get some balls and leave your name.

Finally Matt the Dud Leung (I could care less how you name is spelt) speaks up after posting anonymously. I could care less who you are but you are a prime example of the anonymous pu$$!es on this blog. You obviously get rattled and upset by the comments I make and therefore I shall continue making them. You should grow some balls as obviously your voicing behind people's backs that you don't like me and whatever else you may have said. If you have such balls as you mentioned in your post why is it that I still have no idea who you are yet you talk about me behind my back. Can you say hypocrite much?

Yes Hollandia Gremio plays in the 4th division of Co Ed Soccer. Well done bud.

all france need to do to win the tournament at this point is play benno and mason at the back as often as possible. best defensive line in the tournament by a long shot. and with france's ability to score goals, no team has the ability to outscore france as long as theyre on the pitch.

Anonymous said...

I enjoy Julio's posts as they show how pointless most people on here are.
I doubt Julio cares about the Whitecaps as I am from Saskatoon and I can't stand anyone on that team, and I know very few people can.
I actually think Whitecaps are almost as bad as La Familia.

Anonymous said...

Explain not acting my age?
As I could care less about the Whitecaps. Personally it is a waste of time playing against you hence why I don't show up. I see more skills from the kids I coach then from you guys.

I think calling me out anonymously is not acting like your age, guess I am mistaken by the looks of it. I really don't care much for Whitecaps that hatred or dislike for them would be a waste of time and energy.

France has played 4 games all to crappy teams other then Sudan who didn't have their full team and they for some reason seem to b the team to beat... Please get real. No ne has challenged them so what makes u think they have a team to win. I still think ROI has a better team but I have no doubt Sudan will take it again.

All these people are caught up in insulting people on here instead of talking soccer. Sudan has by far the most exciting team to watch and hope they win again. At least they actually represent their nation and stay away from all the drama.

A few things to note:

1)ROI sucks. Whoever thought these fools could/would win....give your heads a shake. Julio's too busy running his mouth on this blog, rather than concentrating on the game. Focus on the important things you fool. Can't say I didn't call this loss. Played in the weakest pool (like I said), and lost when they played a good team with some skill (Jamaica). Crowd loved every minute of the ROI loss. Mooney did not get spanked was the only thing that was correct about the analysis.

2)Serbia sucks. Played in the weakest pool and beat ROI. Made it to quarterfinals and lost to Afghanistan. Are you people surprised by this. Darko did nothing the entire game. Stood there waiting for the ball. Hey Darko, you aren't going to win the golden boot you fool. You can't. Nice try. Next year don't be so cocky and pick yourself to win. Stick to your lower div 3/4 leagues because that's all you got. Josip is a far better all around player. Props go to him.

2) Whoever thought Nigeria would get destroyed by France is an idiot. Last I checked it went into a shootout after a 6-6 score line. Some people have no soccer knowledge at all. France is not all that.

3) This blog is full of crappy analysis. The only thing good about it, is the anon. posters keeping it interesting and fools like Julio who reply back. Ha ha ha.

I am shocked at what that guy from Sudan did to the REF. No one deserves that. That guy needs to be banned for life, and Sudan need to be banned for quite some time for there disgraceful actions. This is a rec tournament. There is no need for any of that. People are getting hurt now. This is crap. I am utterly disgusted. What a bunch of sore losers. Get lost. We don't need this stuff in our tournament.

Sudan, you lost. Suck it up. Talk about classless. Everyone on Sudan is a disgrace. They all need to be banned.

Anonymous said...

wow what a night, watched all games but wow that was a disgusting play by Sudan!!!

I have never seen a team play like they did!

I hope Sudan gets ban for life in the WCP tournament especially all there players, what a disgusting display, I dont know whats worse Somalia not showing up or Sudans playing ability

I have never seen a team do that in all my life, playing in Regina Soccer!

funny thing an ignorant fan Sudan said "this is racist"

Get real "LIFE BAN FOR SUDAN"

congrats for playing 3 playing yrs in the tourny, I think you accomplished for being the most hated team in the tournament

NOOR BAN FOR LIFE AS WELL,A__HOLE

Anonymous said...

Well, this was possibly the greatest set of games a fan could ask for. Nigeria and France was put on a scoring clinic. Unfortunately in the penalty shoot-out on Leon's shot, I felt they should have called it earlier instead of so late. I think the call altered the game a little.

Afghanistan and Serbia, not much to say. Afghanistan play welled together, and Serbia looked shaky for majority of the first game. A stronger start maybe would have lead to a lower score.

Jamaica and Ireland, I didn't see pay much attention, but for what I did see it was an okay game.

Now for the best game in the history of the WCP tournemant, Sudan and Poland. It felt like Poland finished on their opportunities, which weren't as many as the Sudanese team. The reffing I felt was also a little one sided, obviously favoring Poland. Good on Poland for defending their net well, and limiting the Sudanese offense.

I'll personally forever hate Poland, I can see them winning this whole tournament.

- A nobody.

Anonymous said...

I AGREE! This was bullshit. This tourny will now get a bad rep and there is no way any sudan players should ever be allowed to play in this tourney. Not only a disgrace to the game but to the tourny as well. Feel bad for Holness and the decisions he is going to have to make.

Anonymous said...

I can't believe these people come to Regina, play in the wcp cup and do this. It was absolutely classless and disrespectful. The tournament looks bad, and the players on Sudan look even worse. There needs to be some severe punishments for the whole team. If you are willing to play on a team and kick people/punch people, you should all be punished.

I am disgusted and embarrassed to have witnessed the brutal violence on the field tonight.

Sudan is full of disrespectful players. Flying drop kicks? Really. Get real. Time for some serious consequences. No player on Sudan should be allowed to play for a long, long, long time. I don't care who you are. You are all messed up. Control your anger for crying out loud. All of you should be ashamed.

I don't have much to say other than this was a stunning display of aggressive behavior by Sudan.

I have never ever seen such behavior like this in a soccer event in my entire life. It was just shocking.

Completely shocking.

Somalia = banned = all players including the ones who showed up to the game

Sudan = banned / fined a large sum = all players on the roster

That's two African countries gone for sure next year from the WCP CUP.

Embarrassing

Refs have to start being fair on the field to avoid high emotions, first it was Nigeria with recalling of the saved penalty then Sudan who i felt they deserved some few calls, i could understand the high emotions but to hit an official thats disgusting truly truly disgusting by all sorts of means. i know some people will generalize but hey it was few players from both teams who started this thing.

Anonymous said...

I think just the guy who punched the ref should be banned honestly. A lot of those Sudan guys didn't want to get in that stuff but shit happens. Noor is one of the classiest guys in the tourney, why do people keep on chirping him. Sure he may not be the best goalie but he's for sure top half. Show some respect for him like he does to everyone else. I really feel sorry for a lot of those Sudan players for being categorized for a few players' actions. If you watched the Sudan player #10 he was trying to calm them down all game and then walked off the pitch with his head in his shirt embarrassed... Then tong tong is probably the nicest man in the tourney and means the best. He gets a decent amount of fouls but his full intent is for the ball. I hope he comes back to the tournament and joins a new team like Nigeria or something. Last point, Alex wosik should've got kicked out. I respect him and enjoy watching him play but he knows that he started that fight by pushing the Sudan guy after a hard but clean slide. The refs red carded the guy that got slid and the guy who got drop kicked. Then he gave Poland a free luck when the slide was clean. An exciting but yet disgraceful night for WCP...

Well wasn't that an interesting night ? The France / Nigeria game was very entertaining , if you like a shiny match in soccer . I hope France is better than this or next game might be the last one .

The second game Serbia looked like a team just happy to be there . Afgganistan was far and away more talented.

The third game was the most talented overall game of skill and positional soccer meant the way the game is to be played. Ireland couldn't penetrate the box . Have to say though sad to see Jamaica end up dropping some of their own players from last year to pick up at least 4 former Ireland players 3 of them being Ireland's best players . Shame Shame

The fourth game was entertaining for 1/2 game and a gong show for the other half . Poland was the better team ,Sudan was weak defensively. Poland's goalie has played awesome all tournament (MVP).

Side notes , Somalia a disgrace not to show up for a game I agree players not team should be banned for 1 year from WCP , with the exception of the 3 players who did show up going unpunished !

As for Sudan , I don't feel the WHOLE team should be punished . Somewhere there must be someone with video tape of the incidents. Punish the select few who fought, the guy with the flying kick should get 2-3 year ban in the tournament and any players who threw punch's 1 yr ban . The player who assaulted the referee (charges should be file for assault) he should get a lifetime ban in WCP !

Great tournament but a couple black eyes this leaves on the tournament . I feel for Kevin and all the hard work he has done in this tournament and for you the players to repay him back with this sad lack of sportsmanship.

The time has come for the referee's to call the game closer. Use the yellow card more often and not let things get to the point of boiling over. The referee is not totally absolved here for letting the game get out of hand . I do hope he is ok though and wish him the best , no referee should ever have to be assaulted in a game !

Keep up the good soccer players and stay classy for yourselves , other players and the us the fans .

Anonymous said...

Whoever said I started that fight could not be wrong. Of all people I actually didn't hit anyone, as much as I wanted to. I saw the push, who it was not sure. I wasn't the only one on my team to get suckied either.

I feel for the Ref but he should have called the game after the bench clearing brawl and the Sudan Coach(or injured player) trying to attack him.

I know fans are bias towards their team but for the Sudan fans to claim "racism" is ridiculous.

#6 from Poland had the initial push after the slide tackle, and still played after??? All of Sudan should not be punished for a couple hot heads mistakes.

Anonymous said...

Yeah the Poland guy started the fight by pushing the Sudan guy but then the Sudan guys took it over the top. Too much adrenaline running through the players in that game.

Last night's event are an embarrassment to the event and frankly not only should Sudan be ashamed of their actions, Poland was at fault, as well as many of the fans. I now understand why so many Saskatoon players regard most Regina fans as idiots as the actions and behaviours of many of the fans were simply embarrassing. This blog and the random people insulting other players is a cauldron that fuels incidents like this to occur. Imagine if the people the blackberry poster has insulted had the same control level as the Sudan player that punched the ref. That poster would be laying face first on the ground for his idiotic comments that he continues to make.

1. You claim to stop posting if people stop replying to you, yet you are out of control and post continuously.
2. You claim to post only because you make other people mad, frankly that isn't the case. These other posters don't really seem to get all that angry by your comments.
3. You claim to fool the weak minds, so shut up and stop fooling yourself as you are a disgrace.

Ultimately you are on your phone every time games are being played, so you are either on a terrible team or a complete super fan that doesn't know where to stop. People like you are what fuels incidents like tonight.

I hope that for your safety your identity remains anonymous as I know many people besides those that you insult that would love to teach you a lesson for being extremely ignorant. I know I have directed my comments to one individual but this individual is a microcosm of the negativity found in Regina. This negativity is a cauldron for future incidents and something needs to happen to prevent things like this in the future.

Again I can't state enough how embarrassed I was of Sudan and Poland, but also how embarrassed I was of the fans last night. When a bench clearing brawl starts how does it make sense that the Polska chants get louder? Actions such as that fuel the fire and are embarrassing.

The fans need to take ownership for their actions. The booing was unacceptable, the insults have gone to far. There is a difference between being a fan and between an idiot and right now few people know the difference.

This blog is littered with people that where at fault last night that it would make sense that no one would agree to the fans being an issue.

Anonymous said...

If you can't keep your composure then do not play soccer. No one is at fault but the high tempered players. Not the ref nor the fans on either side. Completely disqusted with Sudan, there were a lot of children at the game, what a thing for them to witness. Despicable to say the least.

Anonymous said...

The fan's booing had little to do with what transpired on the field. If you can't handle being booed then don't do anything worthy of being booed. It's pretty simple.

The players who went too far need to grow up and take ownership for their own actions. Someone booing you doesn't give you the right to physically assault someone.

Anyone who blames the fans before the players must be a mother of a player. "My poor baby isn't at fault. It's everyone else's!" smh

Anonymous said...

No Excuses. First off let me say I am a Poland Player so take this with a grain of salt. The actions of a limited few in this game (NOT ALL) were a disgrace. No excuses. Players are responsible for their actions and should be held accountable. We are ambassadors for our countries; for a tournament that should be breaking barriers, not raising them. “Disgrace” is an understatement.

Rumblings about a “clean challenge” have been circulating. I was 5 ft. away and I saw two studs into our players ankle. No ball contact. But that’s how I saw it. As we have seen in some posts people are seeing a lot of things differently. As will be a trend in this column there was “NO EXCUSE” for our player shoving back at them. Our speech before the game, and at half time, was in essence “Stay disciplined.” Our coaches didn't want this, our fans didn't want this, and our team DID NOT WANT THIS.

AND Melee ensues:

I couldn't see everything. Not many could. I hope the ref and his officials got it right with three red cards, but I think there could have been more. In their defence, and I don’t defend refs very often, there was so much going on, it was impossible not to miss something. The fourth red card was an emotional one on the ref's part. I hope he gets his wits about him and rescinds that card. Our player told him it wasn't safe to play anymore. Was he WRONG? (Big thanks to Mario who did what he could in this game to keep things in check. You did what you were supposed to do and you did it well!)

I feel for Kevin Holness who has to dissolve this whole mess. A lot of hard, honest work is going to the trash for this. I hope ACCESS 7 does NOT air that game and hands the tape over to the WCP committee to get the true story. Take the time and get it right Mr. Holness. Find the guilty parties, whether on our side or theirs, and do what you have to do.

The emotional few are calling for a lifetime ban for Sudan. I would love to see Sudan in the tournament next year, but without the Riff Raff. The classy players and some of their level headed fans (who even apologized to us; and I hope ours to theirs) deserve to be represented as would any other country. Do not punish the many over the actions of a few.

As a Polish Heritage player, an
exhaustive fan of this tournament, I sincerely apologize on behalf of my team and to any of our fans for how this game transpired. It was shameful, no excuses.

We love this team.

We love this tournament.

We are brothers; family.

We sweat together; bleed as one.

We stick up for one another.

I love this tournament, I love my country(s), no excuses.
