ROI - Questions & Answers

Name: Dwayne Gareau

Team: ROI

How would you rate last years performance?
Last years side was disappointing. The type of team Ireland had been fielding in WCP was always filled with plenty of talent and depth. The side last year was short on both. It was a team that was still competitive, however Ireland in years past was always a favourite entering games. The side last year would have been considered an equal and maybe even an underdog entering games.

Are there any new signings or departures?
The team is rebuilt and should field plenty of skill and depth. Their was too big a drop off from the top players to the bottom end players on Ireland last year. I don't think that will be the case this year.

Who is your most important player? Why?
In a 50 minute match and with a crowded field there is always the potential for upsets and teams that are not as good winning games against a better team. A team with lesser quality that works hard can compete. Therefore you will notice that all of the top teams in the tourney will have a quality keeper. If you don't have a quality keeper you are at a huge disadvantage. Therefore I think all of the top teams will/should answer that your most important player in WCP has to be a quality keeper.

Where do you think you will finish this year?
Anytime ROI does not make the final and win it then it should be considered a dissapointment. This year will be no different. ROI will be one of the favorites this year. Anything can happen in the knock out stages, but I don't see how this side does not get through into the medal games without it being an upset.

If you could sign any player in the tournament who would it be and why?

As a player and now as a coach (in various sports) I value someone not only skilled but I love when players have a high work rate. I also enjoy playing with players I have not had a chance to play with through my lengthy time playing in Saskatchewan. By that criteria I guess I would like to play with someone like Boun from Laos or Tavis from Canada. Both guys that are WCP veterans and guys that can be difference makers in games.

Who do you think will win this year?
I think it would be foolish to bet against any of the top teams that have had plenty of success in the tourney. Therefore I would guess that it will be one of France, Laos, Poland and ROI winning it all. I would give the edge to France at the moment. They have a large core of Regina players on their team and are least affected by schedule and making sure all of their quality players are there for every game.

If you could change one thing in the tournament what would it be?

The time of the games. Obviously it is tough to do with the facility and this is something that won't happend due to the large volume of teams in the tourney, but a 50 minute game is too short for my liking.

I almost fell asleep reading this crap. Move on. Find some better stuff to post. More trash to add to the pile.

After reading this snooze feast provided by Dwayne, I feel the need to add a relevant post that should warm up the blog once more.

Being absent for a few days has led for me to do some catch up reading and I was disappointed with the posts; with the exception of a handful that provided some sort of spark to a dull blog. I am not surprised, better yet, I expected Dwayne to bore the readers once more; I just expected more quality posts being offered on here in the week leading up to the greatest stage this city has to offer.

After some boring reading, I did find some points of interest:

1. Bandula: Better yet, Mitchdula! I agree that he is hands down the most arrogant player in this tournament; yet what baffles me is what has led him to such arrogance?! I don't recall Mitchdula achieving anything outstanding in this sport as his peak accomplishment has been playing for the Huskies? Am I not correct? Did it not take him 3 years to even get to see regular minutes?
2. Top Player Banter: I've watched this tournament for 3 years now, and within those three years there have been very few players that have awed me with their talent. I find that this tournament does very little to actually highlight the quality of the players, rather it allows the more athletic players to shine over the raw talent. For example: Garrett mentioned the quality of the Patterson's, but if memory serves me correctly, neither of these two stalwarts are worth mentioning in the elite category.
3. Team Poland & Fans: It is obvious that the Polish consider this to be more than just a tournament; to them it is almost as close to being life and death as any event in their lives. I guess to each their own, yet I find that I am slightly disturbed by the level of "romanticism" they apply to this tournament… anyone else?
4. Dwayne: The more I read what Dwayne or DG has to offer, the more I find him to be a MITCH. He is unwilling to step on toes and therefore plays the "nice guy role". I was utterly bored by his comments and more so, how does one select Boun as a top player?!

We live in Sask, Michal is the best current goalie in the province.

Too bad you're a dud since you're not in the premier league..

Anonymous said...

Guess there are a lack of good goalies if Mitchula is the best GK.
I also can't stand the Polish fans and their "hunger"!! and I am glad people keep telling that loser DG what's up!

The way the Polish fans treated the Sudan fans last year was a disgrace. Absolutely disgusting. They need some sensitivity training asap. Sad to see that type of conduct in very multicultural environment. My kids won't be going to Poland games. I don't stand by that type of behavior at all. I hope others realize how disgraceful these Polish fans are. Like cheer for your team, just be appropriate about it and don't attack other groups.

Anonymous said...

I can't agree more with Anon 9:46. The Sudan team was at fault for their actions, and they were disciplined for them, yet it seemed like the Polish fans felt they were not at fault at all. I understand how this is an opportunity for the Polish community to come together, but their behavior at times has been unacceptable. I can appreciate the energy and excitement that they provide for their team, but I also want nothing to do with that group. I highly doubt that I will be attending any of the Polish games, nor will I be taking my family to watch any of those games either.

ROI used to be the most hated team in the tournament due to their winning ways; I really think that the balance of disliking is really starting to shift towards the Polish team due to the actions of their fans and the attitudes presented by some of the players such as Michal Bandula.

Please explain how they treat Sudan fans disgracefully. You can easily accuse other people behind your anonomys tag but you give no direct explanation and you don't have the balls to leave your full name

Anonymous said...

What actions did Bandula do? He wasn't even apart of the scrum that occurred in that game

Anonymous said...

Peter thats where your wrong, we the Polaks are stronger than ever, I am glad you will not be attending our games, if anything we dont want to associate with a MITCH at all,

sincerely, Poland team/s

Anonymous said...

I agree with you Peter. For once their is a person on the blog so speaks the truth. Keep up the good work. I enjoy reading your stuff. We need to start calling this Bandula character a "MITCH".

Anonymous said...

Ha ha ha ha some guy comes on here signing his name as Poland Team. Wow buddy, do you speak for everyone? What a tool. When you Polish fans get banned for bad conduct then we'll see who's laughing. I guarantee I will be sitting by you idiots and taping every word you say, so watch out MITCH. Technology is great.

Anonymous said...

If they talk in Polish, I have a program that will translate. Just message me if you want the link to download it. Catch these idiots in the act.

I am honestly not surprised that the Polish community wouldn't take responsibility for their actions in the incident. The Sudanese struck the referee, but the comments and actions of the Polish fans were arguably worse. Some of the derogatory comments that were made, throwing water at the players and other actions caused the atmosphere to intensify; the Polish were catalysts that fuelled a dishonourable evening in WCP history. Furthermore, this was not the first time that I have heard negative or derogatory from the Polish fans; with that being said, I am obviously not alone in feeling this way as was there not an incident with Michal in previous years after the Polish were eliminated from the tournament?

I truly hope that the Polish fans learnt a lesson from last year's incident as they were equally as culpable as Sudan. I hope that the Polish change their ways, but I fear that they believe they played no part in escalating the incident. If I were Polish, I would have been ashamed of how my team dealt with the situation; as a few players also attempted very questionable tackles and what not, but I would be greatly ashamed of how the fans represented my culture. If the Polish fans don't want to change their ways, then I encourage someone to get video evidence and post it online, so then maybe, just maybe, the Polish will see the error of their ways.

I am not a coward. My name is Peter and I can't help it if you are unaware of who I am. I will continue to speak what needs to be said, especially when you are a hypocrite and post with a name such as "Polish teams/s".

Anonymous said...

For sounding like such a saint, Peter, you're generalizing a large number of people. To talk about "the polish fans" like you are is ridiculous. First off, there are many people who support Poland and don't sit in the large group at midfield, and, as POLISH FANS, they don't deserve ANY criticism.

Second, I'm sure a couple of fans did do unacceptable things. A couple of fans, maybe more, from BOTH SIDES. Not "the polish fans". For claiming to be all multicultural you should maybe quit generalizing the entirety of polish supporters as I'm sure not all of them were involved in these acts. You're trying to stain the entire country's fans bud. Look in the mirror.

Third, I'm pretty proud of the way the team handled it. The game got chippy, it happens when the stakes rise and the competition is high. Yes, there were unclean tackles both ways, as there are in any game. Have you watched Greece play? However, Sudan was the team to originally clear their bench, and a Sudanese player punched the ref. The game got out of hand, the ref didn't respond (no pun intended), and it therefore exploded. Players were disciplined, and that should be that.

The game could probably have been called after the benches cleared, and the bickering should never have started after the ref was hit. But it did, from BOTH sides. This isn't justification, obviously this shouldn't happen in an event like this, we all know that. But it did, and all we can do now is make sure it doesn't happen again. However, to say you're afraid to bring your kids to games because of the "polish fans" makes you sound like the exact racist prick that you're trying to depict those fans as.

Go sit with them. Learn a chant. Or battle against them and try to be louder, it's all in fun. But don't try and tell me "the polish fans" should all be ashamed of themselves or that this one event caused you to never watch Poland play soccer again. That disgusts me.

I personally have no distaste towards Sudan. I'd love to play them again, as their gimmicky style of play is something you rarely get to compete against. Tong Tong is a physical specimen, and a really nice guy tbh. It was one of the most memorable games I've been a part of, and im sure if we played the game over there would be infinitely more class displayed. So please St. Peter, take it somewhere else.

I want to make my point perfectly clear for all you Polish fans who have no balls to admit what you did was wrong. The majority of you are ignorant and I will agree with the anonymous user that some of you need sensitivity training. I am not a fan of Sudan or Poland. I watched the Poland vs. Sudan game and I sat with many Sudanese people in the community. After the game was done, some old Polish guy with a scarf around his neck tossed a drink and struck a young Sudanese kid in the face. I will be the first to admit that I was in shock for a minute and very disappointed. It's sad to see this type of behavior. I don't condone it at all. People need to man up and take responsibility for their actions. You are an old man, why are you acting so immature. This old man then went on to yell a bunch of stuff in some language and continued to curse until the crowd disbanded. I think that bags need to be checked at this years wcp cup. People are bringing in way too much junk and making a mess in there.

I also heard a lot of upset Sudanese fans swearing back, but that's because of the crap the Polish fans were saying. Some of the things the Polish fans were saying was unbelievable. I won't type them up on here for obvious reasons. All you messed up people need to stop it.

Peter, please don't bring your kids to the Polish games. Not worth it.

Anonymous said...

This is why the WCP CUP and it's COMMITTEE are stupid. They tell the REF'S to let stuff go and people end up getting hurt at the end of the day.

Look at the Sudan / Poland match. You should have definitely called the game when the benches clearly. Instead they let the game continue. Good job WCP COMMITTEE. You are also a part of the reason this unfortunately thing happened. The event should be STAINED. Learn to make proper calls. Don't tell REF'S to "LET THINGS GO". A clear disregard for players safety.

Anon 16:03; unfortunately due to the time stamps I fear that you hadn't had a chance to read the 16:04 post that shows a very true example of why I am not a fan of the Polish fan base. You may consider yourself a Polish fan, but when i refer to the Polish fans everyone on this blog knows exactly who I am referring to. FYI I am referring to the mass of red and white supporters that sit in the middle of the bleachers.

I never once considered myself to be multicultural, but I feel that as a defence mechanism to my post you tried to provide yourself with some sort of incorrect subtext to my complaint towards the Polish actions. For all I care, I would love to see a Team 'X' win the competition without regarding their heritage, but rather skills and talent.

Bottom line: Those EXTREME POLISH FANS, who block the middle bleachers to not allow anyone to sit there. The ones who insult and curse in their native tongue as if no one understands what they are saying. The ones who feel entitled to something. Those are the fans that need to change their ways. How are the actions provided by Anon 16:04 justifiable in any which way or form, especially when a child is involved?! Act like a mob, post as Poland Teams and obviously people will start to mass everyone together, even if you are one of the few Polish fans who went against the actions of the majority the perception of the Polish fans is what I have described above. This is reality, and if it affects you that all Polish fans are being viewed negatively, then maybe do something to change the actions, comments and behaviours of the majority of Polish fans.

Peter

Anonymous said...

Best part of this thread is the fact that Dwayne's post has no relevance with any the comments. A great example of how lame Dwayne is.

Anonymous said...

It is not the actions of the majority. 16:04 stated ONE action by ONE individual, AND an action which is complete heresay. There is no evidence that this truly took place. And in that mass of red and white is many children, grandparents, and parents who are simply there to show wholehearted support for their team and their country. There are only a few who are as "extreme" as you're claiming. I think it's perfect that Poland fans amass to that spot as if they own it. It's way better that they unite and chant together to cheer Poland on. How is the polish fans reserving the middle bleachers any different than the Laotians reserving the bleachers to their right? Or the Sudanese collecting in the bleachers to their left? This still sounds like you're generally attacking polish fans for one heresay incident of one person, in one specific event where MANY people's emotions seemed to get the best of them. Like I originally said, none of it was justifiable, but being a multicultural event it should never stain and entire county's supporters. That's absurd

And as far as you believing any names that people post with. Sorry, but that's simply sad. This is the internet, I can post as whoever I want, Peter.

Sincerely,
Team Sudan

Anonymous said...

Sorry to burst your bubble anonymous person at 17:47, but there is no Team Sudan this year. Why are you posting as Team Sudan? Relax and take a chill pill. You sound mad. Stop hating. You are clearly letting Peter get under your skin. Chill out.

Anonymous said...

Team "Sudan" you've lost any privilege to comment as you are not allowed in the tournament. Simple as that.

Anonymous said...

Peter, your sir, are my hero.

Anonymous said...

Anon 12:50 is a Polish fan for sure. Typical response by those scum!

Anonymous said...

As a Polish fan who masses in the middle, I have a few comments. First and foremost, don't group us all together. That is ignorant. Also, I speak Polish and have never heard anyone swearing at the other fans or teams. Just because you don't know what they are saying doesn't mean they are saying something derogatory. I dint assume that the Loasian or the Sudanese or any other fans are saying something derogatory when they speak their native language and the Polish fans should be afforded the same assumption. Third, if any other fans want to come to a game 3 hours ahead of time to claim an area of the stands, then so be it.

I ask that you please do not let the actions of a few corrupt your thoughts about the group. It is amazing that the Polish fans support their team and country like they do. I am not Polish, but during WCP, I wish I was.

Loud and proud should not be a abd thing.

Thanks.

Anonymous said...

Don't be naive about the Polish fans. You do bring up some valid points, but I understand Polish. I also speak German, French and Portuguese. I understand the comments being made by some of these Polish fans and I know exactly what they are saying, especially the older ones. They aren't as innocent as you make them out to be and that is a fact. If the comments about the Polish fans were unjustified, then why do more than one person feel negatively towards this group? They are starting to get a little out of control and they need to take a step back and control their actions and comments better.

Anonymous said...

Thanks Anon 19:27. I sit there as well, and can confirm that the songs and chants are not derogatory or vulgar in any way. Most are just saying that they support their team (win or lose by the way), and sing about the flag. A good number of the fans were born in Poland and are more passionate than most about their team and the game. The same could be said for Laos and other teams where a large number of fans come from "the old country". After the first melee in that game last year, the Polish team had 2 red carded players. I personally witnessed some of the Sudan fans blocking and pushing them when they're were trying to get to the dressing room. A Sudan fan followed one of our players and his parents to the parking lot at the end of the night verbally abusing them until they threatened to go back in and get one of the police officers. I don't blame all the Sudanese fans for these incidents. And, I admit that I did hear a few of the Polish fans making inappropriate comments - and I told them to shut up. Some were yelling for sine if the Sudan players to go home and were accused of being racist, but they did not mean "go home to Sudan", they meant that they did not belong on the soccer pitch. Did people expect either team's fans to sit quietly? If this had happened at a Rider game, no one would have thought twice about it.

Anonymous said...

Yea I guess you are right, when racist remarks are made in professional sporting events there aren't type of ramifications for those actions, why should the WCP be any different?! Oh wait, there has been a strong movement to get racism out of football in Europe and that should follow suit here as well.

Stop comparing yourself to the Laos fans as it is not the same. There are similarities but the older Laos fans aren't out there insulting people in their native tongue. Those old Polish fans feel entitled and are a needing to adjust their behaviours, simple as that. No one was referring to the chants or songs as being the source of derogatory or negative comments.

No one ever said Sudan fans weren't in the wrong. It is mainly the fact that the Polish fans, particularly those older ones, refuse to admit that they were also in the wrong. I think that is where everyone's dislike for the Polish fans is stemming from.

Anonymous said...

Anon 11:37 your forgot to include that you are most likely a die hard Polish fan. I like and agree with all the comments that the previous anon posters have said; as not once has any Polish fan (young or old) admitted any wrong doing?
Some speak for yourself but I disagree heavily with what you just said.

Booo hook you Polish scumbag! Of course you'd come on here and try to say that the Polish weren't at fault.
I hope people really pay attention this year to those fans as I wouldn't be surprised to see more antics from them YET AGAIN.

Anonymous said...

Anon 11:37, I must say that I applaud you for your efforts of trying to sound intelligent yet your argument is heavily misguided and incorrect. The anon poster clearly defined the Polish continent which he spoke of, if I am not mistaken he defined it to the "large group of red and white that sit in the middle of the bleachers". He stated that the "older" Polish fans and their actions, further distinguishing individuals from the majority. Therefore the anonymous poster was not generalizing every single Polish fan; ultimately this leads your argument to be wrong. I do have to applaud you for googling up your facts, but it takes more than an internet search engine to actually understand what things mean; especially how the arguments are no where near being racist.

Therefore there lies the problem, instead of you possibly seeing where all these posters are coming from, you further look at ways to present your case as being the victim which ultimately furthers a point I also made previously; the point being that the those aforementioned Polish fans still believe they did nothing wrong.

Valiant effort, but your further exemplified the behaviours all the anon posters are complaining about.

Well said Petey! None of the comments are remotely racist. Get a life POLISH FANS!

EXACTLY! They sometimes don't even ask people to move, they just squeeze them out!!!! So rude on their part.

Anonymous said...

I've heard so many separate stories of these Polish Fans being rude and straight MITCH to people that aren't Polish. I can't stand them and obviously this feeling isn't held by only a few.

I WILL SIT IN THE MIDDLE OF BLEACHERS IF I WANT AS I AM PAYING A PRETTY PENNY TO WATCH GAMES! POLISH OR NOT!

Anonymous said...

Well it looks like youth games are going to be packed! If all these people are planning on coming three hours early to compete with the polish fans for the middle section, simply to show to the rest of us that "they paid a pretty penny"! Sounds like a lot of fun :)

Anonymous said...

I come to some games, but squeezing people out of the middle sections is quite rude. These Polish fans have to be kidding themselves. I'm not going to sit around and tolerate being told where to sit. I'm with everyone else. Time to teach these losers a lesson.

Anonymous said...

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA sucker! Looks like ya gotta stand then bud! Either that or throw some bows with the polish folk! Good luck my friend!

Anonymous said...

I think we should all have our phones / translators ready for when these Polish fans start chirping others. Time to get the committee involved. Some of these people need to be banned. These type of inappropriate behaviors need to be addressed right away before people get hurt and legal action is taken.

Anonymous said...

Yeah let's get that anonymous guy's parents, I heard they're really good lawyers! We'll sue everyone at WCP who curses! Curse words hurt, and demand legal action to be taken! They'll be banned for sure! Let's waste the committee's time with this as well.
This is genius, I love it

Anonymous said...

i will puke on anyone thinking they can steal my spot at the wcp cup this year

- not a polish fan

Anonymous said...

I would pay good money to see the Polish group relegated to the worst seating in the building. For years they've been pricks about people sitting in "their area" as they have called it to other players, fans and kids alike. I would love to see "their area" taken and filled by everyone else!

The Polish fans' true colours are starting to come out on this site, I expect that to continue once the tournament starts!

Wtf is wrong with people on here. This blog is here to talk about the teams, players, and specific games. There's been 50 straight comments talking about one team's FANS. NOT EVEN THE TEAM. No one cares, stfu, talk about something relevant.

Mike, maybe make a new post or something. Give these idiots a new topic to talk about. They've been bitching for a week about garbage that is QUITE LITERALLY last year (pol vs sud).

Alright this could go on forever so let try to end on this. The "brawl" happened and people got excited/overexcited. It happens. I personally did not see any particularly bad behaviour by anyone not playing on the field. If there was any truly poor behaviour it was by one or two individuals and therefore it is unfair to paint an entire teams fans with one brush.

Time to let it go.

I agree with Mike, you guys are blowing this way out of proportion. It's almost comical how angry people are getting over this, Peter and friends especially.

I think one post, two max, should be enough to articulate how much you dislike the polish fans (for whatever reason), no need to keep hammering away at it. We get the picture. Let's all just settle down and talk about things relating to this years tournament.

I love how this tournament started as a way to bring cultures together, but through these blogs it's only brought hatred and divide among the soccer community. Whether it's hating Team Poland for their actions last year, or trash talking players (which is laughable in itself as it's an amateur tourney filled with 99.9% of the players never having done anything noteworthy in their lives so it's a lot of stones thrown in glass houses) in this tournament it's never good. It's unfortunately that we've lost the sense of 'community' within soccer here and become a lot more small time dick swinging instead.
