20 Quick Completely Random Thoughts on WCP 2012

1. Goalkeeping may be the most important part to a teams success. Has a team ever won a playoff game with a keeper that is not playing in the top division of their city? I can't think of one.

2. When gauging how to rank the teams coming into this tournament the first thing I look at is where the elite talent is located. By elite talent I mean players who are the difference makers. Now obviously this is subject to opinion but I would say there are currently about 20-25 players who could be considered "elite".

3.With the majority of the elite being on ROI, Laos, France, and El Salvador it's not surprising they are probably the most successful teams in WCP history. Now I know this is practically blasphemy in 2012 BUT

4. Poland seems to be the team that everyone is talking about but I am not sold. They seem to be a team that has 2 elite guys and then a lot of slightly above average guys. Not sure that equals a championship.

5. Speaking of Poland, a 2-2 draw against Afghanistan is a bad result. Even if it is an exhibition game.

6. I have a lot of friends on France but I am very worried about that team. Not only are they missing some key guys but many of their guys are playing little to no soccer. Could be in for a bumpy ride.

7. Germany has managed to keep the Pattersons and picked up a few other players (not sure on names) but if Germany can get a bit of roster turnover they might actually make it out of their group this year.

8. I have seen a lot of teams practicing down at the facility and I am not exactly sure I get why. Unless you're going to train everyday then training 10 times a year is not going to help. It's fun but is it worth the expense?

9. Anybody got a pick for Golden Boot this year? With David Brown out, the race is wide open.

10. That being said it will almost certainly be someone from ROI. The teams in their group are bad and some of those games are going to get ugly.

11. I am excited to see what the always fashionable England womens team do to up their style this year. I am thinking leather bomber jackets embroidered with the 3 lions. Wicked.

12. So Ukraine women's to win this year right? That seems like a good guess.

13. 2-2 is such a bad result.

14. This year has been particularly quiet in terms of beaking on the blogs. I usually have to sensor so many more comments. Haters, where ya at?

15. Things are particularly secretive in the Jamaica camp. Secret training times, mystery exhibition games..... What are they working on behind the scenes? Could this be the year they finally put it all together and win the whole thing........ROFL

16. Biggest transfer of the year so far? Has to be Jay Tomchuk from ROI to Poland. One of the few natural finishers in this tournament. He'll score, alot.

17. One criticism I have with this years tournament is the introduction of a U18 division. I know its nice to get everyone involved but if these guys aren't good enough to make the bench of some of the bad senior teams then I have to question if it's something I want to watch.

18. Why not have a division for dogs? Get the pet owners involved.

19. Chico to Afghanistan. Did anyone see that coming? I sure didn't.

20. Because of the circles I roll in I definitely have more information on some teams than I do on others. I am also not real familiar with the Womens or Youth divisions. If you want to see something on here then feel free to contribute info. Otherwise we roll on.

Ran across this on the internet and couldn't resist putting it on the website. A lot of people are tipping Steven Gerrard to be the next England captain which would be quite the achievement. This video of Man U fans chanting during the Liverpool match pretty much sums up how Giggs' career compares to Gerrards.

Of course referring to the number of titles each has one. Hilarious!

Transfers and Rumours

Now that the schedule is out I thought I would start a spot to talk player movement and what is people are hearing about new teams etc. Here's what I have heard.

ROI have lost both Brett Levis and Jay Tomchuk to Poland as Poland look to poised to make a push to the final.

ROI have also lost Brendan Garritty, Jeff Friesen and double golden boot winner and all time leading WCP Cup goalscorer David Brown after he tore his ACL. They are now openly searching for a striker.

Germany have picked up Saskatoon native Kent Mcdonald as well as bringing in Josh Forsberg from Portugal.

The Patterson twins are stuck in a transfer saga with Germany wanting to keep them but ROI and France both pressing for their signatures.

France could be in for a bit of a tough year as they have some players who are either hurt or no longer living in Saskatchewan. That list includes Brett Bachelu, Kash Bahia, Yianni Harbis, Mason Bulych and Gordie Peever.

From what I gather Laos' Josh Northey is 50/50 to return. This is something to keep an eye on as he is pivotal to their success.

This is just a start. Would love more on other teams as well as new teams and womens and youth teams. Fire it up people!

Suarez - World's most ignorant man?

Ahead of Man U - Liverpool tomorrow I thought this might be an appropriate time to go on a bit of a rant on a player who I have grown to absolutely despise.... Luis Suarez. This guy is something else. For those of you not familiar with Suarez, he is a talented Liverpool striker who was recently suspended for 8 games for directing racial slurs (I am sure they can be found if you scour) towards Man U defender Patrice Evra. Suarez, of course, was quick to deny the allegations. However, his story of the events, wavered and then wavered some more and with a number of witnesses actually hearing him say these things to Evra as well as video footage and his own eventual admission he was found guilty and suspended.

Then came the excuses. His first beauty being that use of such language was commonplace in Uruguay where he is from. Really? First of all, I am not familiar enough with Uruguayan culture to know if that's true (if it is you need to get with the times Uruguay), but I am sure Suarez is not going around calling his friends what he called Evra. If he is I don't imagine they remain friends very long.

Then came one of the most audacious comments I have ever heard. Upon returning from his 8 match ban and doing this: (click on image to view)

Suarez went on the radio and said this little doozy "I knew what I did and there is a kind of football law that says 'what happens on the pitch, stays on the pitch and that's the end of the story',”. Shocking. This kind of stuff doesn't belong anywhere, let alone on a football pitch. The idea that football is some sort of brotherhood that should protect Suarez is insane. Listen buddy, just cause you look like a neanderthal does not necessitate that you have to act like one. Ok I am done.

They have no chance of winning, that Manchester United

Where to start, there's so much that this team lacks

Though they have one good striker, the one who hates blacks

Their Europa League hopes, are barely alive

They hold on to their last trophy, in 2005

As pitiful a squad, as I've ever seen

How many premier leagues have they won? A meager 18

Manchester City seem, to be the main competition

Though their title hopes, may never come to fruition

Their squad looks strong, their record pretty much spotless

But you can't always buy trophies, as Chelsea has taught us

Collected a bunch of babies, who all need their soother's

Not sure you can make winners, out of a bunch of losers

Man City win the premiership? You make me crack up

I mean it took almost half a century, just to win the FA Cup

Man City does currently sit, 2 points clear

With Man U apparently having a, "down year"

With many games in hand, let's not forget this

Sir Alex has previously, done more with less

And as they say in boxing, about the elite

A champion always, gets back to their feet

So when the season is done, and all has been said

Youth Boys - Italy vs Germany

First game of the day has my favorites Italy against a German team that looked very dominant in their win over Scotland. Italy beat a very big, strong Ukraine team in order to reach the final but apparently they will be missing a bunch of their Sask players. So I imagine that will make Germany the favorites.

Prediction: Germany 5-3

Womens: Ukraine vs Germany

A rematch of last years final sees a Ukraine team coming off a very shaky win against Chile take on German side that has looked very strong in every game. The deciding factor in this game should be the quality of the goalkeeping. Both team have players that can shoot from anywhere so it will come down to which keeper can make the big saves. Watch out for Megan Cormier (Germany) and Chelsie Dorosh (Ukraine) as they are topping the goal scoring charts for the Womens. Ukraine really did not look very good in their last game so.....

Prediction: Germany 2-1

ROI vs Laos

Another rematch of last years final that went to a shoot out. Laos struggled with Sudan in the 1st game but have come on strong since. ROI have blown out every team not named El Salvador and even in that game had 80% possession. This promises to be a great game played by too great teams. While Laos has added a player or two, ROI has revamped their entire squad with this game in mind . However, what this game really comes down too is not who either team has but who Laos doesn't. Josh Northey was key last year drawing the attention of multiple defenders at all times. His absence will be the difference. Plus, I cant pick against my own team. Maybe if we were playing France.

Prediction: ROI 3-2

Best of the Quarterfinals.

Game: Laos vs Greece - Far and away the best and most interesting game of the night. Probably only because of the fact that Greece scored first and Laos had to fight their way back. All of the other games were either blow outs or just boring to watch.

Team: El Salvador - The only team that I didn't predict to win. Pulled off the upset over the best team of the tournament in France. Not the most impressive showing but got the job done. I'm sure they will take it.

Player: David Brown - ROI - I'm glad his name is easy to spell as I am constantly typing it on here. Added 5 more to his count yesterday, including a couple brilliant ones. People say that they need to mark him but it's not that easy as I'm pretty sure that was Canada's plan. Easy to say but harder to do.

Goal: David Brown - ROI - Scored an absolute ripper from the right touchline. I had a great view of this and I'm still not sure how he managed to fit it in there. Honorable mention to both Jay Tomchuk for his slow roller that found his way back the Canada keeper and half their defense. Also to Sean Riggs for his game winner against France. Good free kick.

Gaffe: Mason Bulych - France - I hate to do this to Mason but hitting the roof in the 9th minute of a 10 minute extra time is a killer. Really cost them the game. Sucks as that game looked like it was on it's way to a shoot out.

Call: France vs ES ref - Caught that blatant hand ball which would have been France's first goal. The France attacker punched the ball into the net and then started to celebrate. Happened really quickly and was tough to catch. Unfortunately it knocked out the favorites.

Attempt to Win: Canada - I love the idea of being down 4-1 and down to your last resort - pulling the fire alarm. You know the old saying, if you can't win then evacuate the entire building. Unfortunately this was not effective as I'm not sure a single person moved. Tried twice though.

7:30 Laos vs Greece

The defending champs take on this years Cinderella story Greece. Greece have proven they can hang with the big boys having tied France in the round robin. However, Laos poses a much different threat than France. What makes this match-up so interesting is Greece's and Laos' completely contrasting styles. Greece is a very physical team that will sit back and soak up pressure well getting stuck in on every opportunity. Laos is very attacking minded and will carry the play while moving the ball quick in hopes that it will eliminate Greece's physical game.

What to Watch:
A couple things to keep an eye on in this game. First is the battle on the wings. This is where the most space can be found and I imagine what Laos will try to expose against Greece. Greece, on the other hand, has done a great job of double teaming players down the wing and has been able to cancel out those attacks. If Greece does commit men to doubling on the wings, as they often have will that leave shooters, such as Bryan Murrell, with clear lanes to the net? Finally, you have to wonder if Greece can continue to score on every opportunity they get? Their finishing has been clinical to say the least and it will have to continue if they want a chance in this game.

Prediction:
3-1 Laos. I would love to see Greece win this game I just think that Laos has too much fire power for Greece to deal with. Then again, I said the same things when Greece played France and boy was I wrong. Besides Greece loves being the underdog so hopefully this just fuels that fire.

8:30 ROI vs Canada

Last years runners up against last years forth place finishers in what should be a better battle than most think. Skill-wise there is not really a question as too who is the better team. ROI is likely technically superior in almost every position. That doesn't necessarily translate into a win though. In a game which takes place on such a small field with so many large bodies, tactics and stamina can play a huge part in the result. I would expect to see Canada sit back, get bodies behind the ball and let ROI carry the game while trying to counter attack at every opportunity.

What to Watch:
The biggest thing to watch in this game is who scores first. If its ROI, watch out. We all saw what happened to poor Norway when they conceded early. However, if it happens to be Canada. Game on! Canada is a team that loves playing from in front. It really suits their style. Something else to monitor is where Canada plays Jarvis. Do they move him to the back to deal with Brown and try someone else in the middle or do they keep him where he has been all tournament, in the midfield. I really think this game will come down to set pieces, specifically who gives up more. Both teams has been deadly on them and I will look for that trend to continue.

Prediction:
4-2 ROI. Obviously this is incredibly biased. I am not going to pick against my own team. I do definitely think Canada will make a game of this I just think ROI will be too much for them eventually. ROI on top, I hope!

9:30 France vs El Salvador

In what many expect to be the best and whiniest game of the night are the top team France and and a very, very good team in El Salvador. I actually had El Salvador winning their group going into the tournament but a loss to Sudan changed things. France had their own setback in the Greece game but had a very strong showing against Afghanistan so they will be riding high. These are two great teams so I expect this to be an amazing, and close game.

What to Watch:
I have a feeling that these two teams midfields will cross each other out. There is a lot of skill in there but also a lot of bodies. The key for me in this match will be hold up play by the strikers. Jerson, Alvaro for ES and Scholan, Rory for France. Who will better link the play for their team? Jerson and Rory will also be the guys pulling the trigger for their respective teams. Who will have their shooting boots on?

Prediction:
4-3 France. I have France easily wining the whole thing so I have to continue to go with them. This could be an OT game. I haven't quite decided yet. I see this one being a very back and forth, tight game. Teams will spend the early goings feeling each other out but the goals will come. This should be an epic one!

10:30 Poland vs Norway

Poland is a team I did not even pick to make it out of their group but here they are undefeated. Norway on the other team comes into this game very defeated. Killed by ROI in their last game, a game in which I really expected a lot more from them, Norway was not impressive. This will be a physical game played at a million miles per hour. If you want to see the ball get knocked around the pitch this isn't going to be your cup of tea. These are two of the hardest working teams in the tournament and that should make this an extremely fast paced game.

What to Watch:
Like I said before this will be a fast paced game but that's not what it will come down too. What it will come down too is the skilled players. That's Reis, Stefan, and Sawka for Norway and Bart, Sarazen and Meschke for Poland. Someone will have to step up and be the deciding factor in this game and I expect it to be one of these six. This game will be decided on a moment or two of individual brilliance. Just wait for it.

Prediction:
3-1 Poland. After Norway's last showing I really don't see them beating anyone good. I know they like to say they are a big game team but 1 big game win does not cross out their overall bod of work. Expect this to go down to the wire but Poland to pull it out.

Another day of not having much to write about unfortunately but I will give it a shot.

Game: Sudan - Northern Ireland - Really this game was not great to watch but I do have a not-so-secret love affair with Sudan so I will go with that game. Too bad they couldn't have made it through.

Player: Germany Backup Keeper - To our delight got put in for the 2nd half and performed well. A couple solid saves and "The Push". Super stuff.

Goal: Tong Tong - Rose above everyone for another one of his epically powerful headers. Not sure anyone was within 3 meters of him but I won't take away from him because of that.

Pass: Tong Tong - The rare goal/pass combo for the Sudanese front man. On a long ball played in he back-heeled beautifully to an onrushing winger who then greedily went for net from a bad angle. Deserved a ball in front and a finish. Too bad.

Lineup: Germany - For the 2nd half of the Germany game against Scotland, Germany's lineup consisted of 3 keepers. One in net, one as a striker and one on the wing. One of them even managed to pick himself up a goal. Probably won't see that too often.

Tackle: Scotland Player - I missed his number but he came sliding in really late on Germany's back up keeper. This is a bit biased because this was the tackle that preceded "The Push" but it was pretty late so I'll sneak it in here.

Push: Germany Backup Keeper - This was the highlight of the night for me. For those of you unfamiliar with Germany's backup keeper he is probably one of the youngest players in the tournament and is pretty small. However, after the Scotland player put in a late tackle on him, he saw it was going unpunished and he knew he had to take matters into his own hands. Then came "The Push". Two hands right in the back. Amazing!

Dancing: Sudan Fan - Anyone who managed to stay til the end of Sudan - N. Ireland game got a real treat. A Sudan fan, rallied on by his cohorts, took to the field and showed off some of the finest dance moves the WCP Cup has ever seen. Encouraged on by the WCP worker bees, he danced his way off the field to mass cheering. Man that guy could cut a rug!

Best of the Weekend.

Yes I know I have been falling behind so here it is, the long awaited best of the weekend.

Game: Canada vs Ukraine - Many of the games did not live up to their hype ie. (El Salvador - Laos) but this one did. Ukraine came out firing on all cylinders and they got goal for it. However, Canada was resilient and despite being on the defensive for most the game found two goals in a 3 minute span to seal a 2-1 victory. Still not sure how they did it.

Team: France - They had set themselves up with a potentially dangerous game against Afghanistan. However, when the time came for France to step up they certainly did just that. A really strong showing despite playing a few games, without key players. France's stroll to the final continues. Honorable mention to Germany Womens team who had to come from behind to beat Chile.

Player: David Brown - ROI - It pains me to write this but the guy won't stop scoring. Added three more to his tally against Norway in what was supposed to be a good match. Didn't turn out that way though.

Goal: Tavis Workman - Canada - Scored a ripper of a free kick from the top of the box. Hit it extremely hard into the top right corner of the net. Maybe not the nicest goal but hugely important in assuring that Canada advanced to the next round. Honorable mention to the Chile Womens forward who received the ball about 20 yards from the opposition's net and calmly turned and lobbed it over the German keeper.

Pass: Leon Derks - Ukraine - Leon set up the Ukraine goal versus Canada in beautiful fashion. Collected the ball on the top of the Canada box and then back-heeled neatly to an over lapping Ukraine player who slid it home. Pretty to watch.

Gaffe: Keeper - Portugal - I could write an entire post of just goalkeeping mistakes I saw this weekend but I won't. Instead I will focus on this particular one. With just minutes left and Portugal tied 1-1 with Sierra Leone the keeper misjudged a long ball and had it bounce over his head and into the net. Not a great way to lose a game.

Block: Travis Brady - France - This was late in the France - Afghanistan game so a lot of people had already taken off. Afghan had a kick in near half and Travis decided to bravely block the kick in with his face. What really made this block was the reaction after he was hit. He just fell stiffly right onto his back. Not funny that he got hit in the face but a humorous reaction.

Haircut: #27 - Jamaica - Certainly the most interesting hair style I have seen so far. It was kinda like an afro split into two pony tails. I am not sure words can really do it justice.

Peeve: ES vs Laos - This was a game that I had tipped as my game of the round robin and its not that it was a terrible game. There was some great soccer played in it. But the end of the game was hard on the eyes. I know that it was the result that both teams needed but simply standing still while the clock runs out is dull.

Team: Poland - I guess I will go with the team that looked the strongest and that's Poland. Didn't have much to overcome though as it is darn easy to look good against Scotland.

Game: France vs Nigeria - I am extremely tempted not to pick one as they were all quite disappointing but if I was forced I would pick this one as it was the least least interesting.

Goal: I can't even pick one. This block of games was marred by terrible goalkeeping so nothing special was needed to score.

Gaffe: Allan Sserunjogi - Nigeria - Hit the post on what was a very important penalty for Nigeria. Would have put them ahead 1-0 but that wasn't the case. Honorable mention to Scotland for setting up a two man wall when Poland had not asked for space. Add in that the two man wall faced their own net and that Poland just passed it three yard to the left and you end up with a Poland goal.

Dressed: The Italy Womens Coach - Shows up to every game wearing a suit. If your team is going to lose might as well look good doing it. Plus it is not easy to out-dress England womens team.

Dancing: Scotland Fan - Dressed in a kilt and Braveheart face paint this particular fan used halftime to showcase what was almost certainly the niftiest footwork we have seen from a Scotsman so far this tournament.

Big Games For Saturday

There are a ton of big games on Saturday so lets get started with the biggest one:

10:00 am Setanta FA CUP Semi Final Manchester United vs Manchester City

Manchester City will launch another futile attempt to have this banner removed from Old Trafford. Manchester City have gone 35 years without winning a trophy and I would expect the streak to continue to grow. Since Man City last won a trophy Manchester United has won 11 League titles, 2 European Cups, 8 FA Cups, 4 League Cups, 1 UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup, 1 UEFA Super Cup, 1 Intercontinental Cup and 1 FIFA World Club Cup. Manchester is RED!

Next up is SUPER SOCCER SATURDAY for the Women's division starting with:

5:00 pm Germany vs Chile

Two former Champions will rumble in the first game of a solid double header. Expect a tight game which will go down to the wire. This should decide who comes out first in their pool. Polish up your drum cause this ones going to be a banger.

6:00 pm Ukraine vs England

Part two of the double header see last years champions taking on the tournaments best dressed team. This should be Ukraine's toughest test of the round robin as England will be out looking for blood. This could be a potential preview of the final. Though as I am currently watching England play, they are looking less than impressive. England are currently tied with Ukraine on points and have the exact same +/-. This game will be the decider!

After the double header we move to a quad of Mens games starting with

7:00 pm Ukraine vs Canada

I can barely figure Group D out. As far as I can tell Ukraine is not mathematically eliminated yet but they will need to beat both Canada and Jamaica. Canada will look to bounce back from a disappointing defeat to Poland and needs to prove they belong in the 2nd round. Should make for a great game.

8:00 pm Jamaica vs Poland

This one has the makings of an epic game. Poland come in having looked very strong so far. On the other hand Jamaica seems to be just straddling the boarder of being a contender. Will be interesting to see how both teams will come out. I believe Jamaica will once again be missing some personnel so that's something to watch.

9:00 pm Afghanistan vs Nigeria
I am writing this before the France - Nigeria game so things may have changed by then but if Nigeria was to beat France this game will be huge. Whichever team loses will almost certainly be eliminated and if Afghanistan can pull one out it will set them up with a huge match against champs-to-be France. A real meaningful game.

10:00 pm Laos vs El Salvador

Hopefully this lives up to my hype of game of the round robin. I have big expectations for this one.While Laos has already sealed their spot in the next round, El Salvador needs this one to advance. This should be a very offensive games with goals galore. If El Salvador does win it means that fan favorites Sudan are eliminated. So I am imposing a curfew on all Laosian players and trust me I will be calling all of you to ensure you are in bed. Yep starting with you Tony!

Tomorrow is probably the best/most important day of games so..... MAKE IT DOWN THERE!!!!!!

Friday 10:00 France vs Nigeria

Why its important: I am not going to lie, coming into this tournament I thought this would be France's toughest game. As you can see in my Group C Preview here. Now I believe France may have already had their toughest game from Greece. This game is still very important though. If France loses even one of their last 2 games against Nigeria or Afghanistan their fate will then be out of their own hand. On the other hand Nigeria has to win to stay alive. Here is the table:

What to expect: I would expect Nigeria to come out and try to pressure France as Greece has set the blueprint as to how to beat them. Nigeria will be flying and will look to go ahead early. However, I don't believe Nigeria to be as defensively solid as Greece and that will be a problem. Their "flying around" will leave them exposed at the back and their goalkeeping has been suspect all tournament. France will come out and try and keep possession and shoot on net as often as possible. If Nigeria can stay defensively sound I feel this game will close. But I have no faith in that. France will want to show why everyone is proclaiming them as the future champs and they will. I'll take a 5-3 win for France. I hope I am wrong though as Nigeria are my boys!

Game: Colombia vs El Salvador - The score is not reflective of how this game should have finished. Colombia missed a penalty, hit two crossbars, and had two cleared off the line by ES defenders. A really good game actually.

Team: Germany Womens - Since none of the teams really upset anyone I will go with the team that put in the most dominant performance. Thats Germany. Beat Austria all over the pitch and scored a couple nice goals. A team looking like they could make a run to the final.

Goal: George - Greece - Sorry I am not going to attempt his last name. His first goal game from a free kick which he floated neatly over the Afghanistan keeper. Expertly done.

Player: George - Greece - Scored the opening two goals for Greece which were needed to set Greece on their way. Has played quite well throughout the whole tournament so probably deserves a shout.

Save: Adam Rolfe - El Salvador - Did extremely well to head a Afghanistan free kick onto the crossbar. Seems like the El Salvador players make more saves than their keeper. This one came at a crucial time.

Gaffe: #10 Greece - A fine set piece by Greece lead to a wide open chance for the Greece man from inside the 6 yard box. Managed to launch it way over somehow. Disappointing effort.

Peeve: Seeing the entire Greece bench yell at the referee for a foul and then when he gives the foul yell that they wanted advantage. Tough crowd to please.

Item Brought to a Game: Wok - Columbia - I saw a Colombian fan walking out with a wok. I can only speculate that it was used to cook stir fry in order to fuel their exceptional fans.

Quote: "Do something smart" - fan. Apparently this was insight into what Greece could do better. Unfortunately I may be dumber for having heard it.

Because I played on Tuesday I didn't see any of the other games so I decided to combine the two days:

Game: Colombia vs Laos. Maybe not a thriller score-wise but the fans were really out for this one. Laos scored some real terrific goals which made it worthwhile too. More to come on that.

Team: Nigeria. Beat Italy in what was a must win game for them. They needed all three points to keep pace in their group and they delivered. Will need to continue this trend as their games are only going to get harder.

Player: David Brown - ROI -Actually had a to consider a few players here. Both Adam Ailsby and Bryan Murrell turned in strong games for Laos and the blond kid on Serbia managed to poach 2 goals vs Ireland but Brown managed to score 5. Very Dimitar Berbatov-esque. That seals it for me.

Goal: Adam Ailsby - Laos - I would have loved to put my free kick on here from 30 yards out but Ailsby had to go and top it. A long ball played in to Ailsby who managed to convert and outrageous back heel volley into the top corner. Great stuff.

Save: Austria's GK - Again not really a specific save but he kept Austria in the game for way longer than most thought he would. A really solid outing for the keeper. Wicked beard too!

Tackle: Italy #11 - He was out of control. Literally I am not sure he could control his body. Received a card for persistent infringement 6 minutes in. That's right 6 minutes!

Gaffe: Sean Riggs - El Salvador - Riggs made a mess of what should have been a sure goal when the ball rebounded off the goalie leaving Riggs with a tap in from 6 yards out. CLANK! Post. A little too casual.

Peeve: The non red card in our ROI game. Maybe this is only because I played in that game but red cards have to be given for obvious red card offenses. In this situation Brown was on a clear breakaway and the obvious last man just kicked out his legs. Easiest call in the book but nope yellow. I get adjusting the FIFA Law's a bit but simply saying you're going to win anyway is unacceptable. Is punching me in the face only a yellow if people know we are going to win?

Also I am having a few problems with the older comments. Working on fixing it!

Game: Ukraine vs Italy - Youth Boys. This was a close game as it ended 6-5 in favor for Ukraine. Literally I went to the car for 3 minutes and came back and it was 2-2. Scoring that many goals leads to an awesome game.

Team: Italy - Youth Boys. Clearly a much younger and smaller team but still put together a really solid performance. There is lots of talent on that team. I could put Greece into this category however their victory does not compare to their game last night against France.

Player: Troy Lydiate - Jamaica. Another great performance by him especially with the absence of Korthius and Holness. Jamaica has sorely been missing someone to bring the ball forward and Troy has filled that void.

Goal: Italy - Youth Boys. I'm not sure I can completely describe this goal but what happened was the Italy midfielder sent a ball through to their striker which sent him on a breakaway. The striker never touched the ball but instead feinted over it, faking out the keeper and leaving it to roll into the empty net. I'm sure I didn't do this goal justice.

Tackle: Yianni Cabylis - Greece. Caught an Italy player late and by late I mean real late. Might have caught him tomorrow. Very deserving of a yellow card at the least as I'm sure we could all hear the Italy players head slam off the ground.

Gaffe: Italy's Goalkeeper - Men. Made a really good save but unfortunately he palmed it down behind the goal line. Not sure if he knew where he was on the field but it was unfortunate. Had a great game otherwise. Honorable mention to the referee who called the Youth Boys game who called things a bit too tight.

Save: Ukraine's Goalkeeper - Youth Boys. Saved well on a shot late in that game which would have been the goal to tie it up. Really nice stuff.

Love/Peeve: The Italian national anthem - By far the best anthem to listen to however it might be the longest anthem of all time. By the time I am finished dancing to it my legs are cramping. Can we shorten it up a bit as I have a game tonight and I am on a shortage of bananas. I need my potassium.

Also a large shout out to DJ Noor for the night. I love Duck Sauce!! Should be played constantly!!

Man U vs Chelsea tomorrow in Champion's League. 12:45 on Setanta and I expect a Man U victory in this second leg. For all the Chelsea fan out there (yes there is only one of you) you are going down! Drogba style. Will be a great game, don't miss it. Berba!!!

Blowouts.

A lot has been made about the blowouts that are happening in this tournament but I really don't see the big deal. People have talked about adding playoffs and relegating teams but I don't see this as an issue. This tournament is self regulating. The stronger teams beat down the lesser teams until they either improve or are forced quit the tournament. Now it may seem like we having teams quit takes away from the tournament but it doesn't really. For example last year there was a Chile Men's team which was becoming worse each year until in dropped out. It was replaced by this year's Sudan team a much stronger team. A new team always fills in the void and the quality of the tournament increases each year. In my opinion the best way to dissuade blowouts is to have blowouts now.

Sunday marked the completion of the 1st week of the tournament. So I thought I would look back and reflect on the Best memories of the week. Here are the best's:

Lineup:

GK : Michal Bandula - Poland - I think everyone knows how well he has played this week. Poland's MVP has kept them in the game on multiple occasions.

Defender: Jarvis Hughybaert - Canada - I don't have room in my midfield so I will move him to my defense where he usually plays. Man-marked Korthius out of game vs. Jamaica and has had a couple other great performances.

Defender: Bryan Murrell - Laos - Has had a lot of playing time at the back and scored a really important goal for Laos against Sudan. Solid tournament so far.

Right Mid: Brett Levis - ROI - Has been scoring goals like crazy. I believe he as at least 6 already. Strong on the ball despite his diminutive size. A great pickup for ROI.

Center Mid: Tong Tong - Still haven't got his name but he has scored some absolute rippers in the tournament. Also has really dictated the game for Sudan as he is as important for Sudan as any other player is to their team.

Center Mid: Reis Cooper - Norway - Reis has been all over the pitch pressuring guys and winning balls. Usually known for his crunching tackles. Reis has found his goalscoring boots in this tournament and leads the way for Norway.

Left Mid: David Patterson - Germany - Anyone who watched Germany v Ukraine saw David pretty much do whatever he wanted. Ran circles around Ukraine defense and has added several goals for his troubles.

Forward: Brett Bachelu - France - Scored 4 goals in one game and an extremely important one in his game against Greece yesterday. Brett's fire power has lead a strong France side.

Forward: David Brown - ROI - May lead the tournament in goalscoring. I'll have to look into it. However, he looks like a favorite for golden boot and scored an audacious lob in one of his earlier games.

Obviously I can't include everyone so I narrowed it down to the best that I personally saw. Any omissioins? I did have a couple tough choices. Holness, Tavis were both on the cusp of making it but decisions had to be made.

Might have been the best day of games so far so I have a lot to work with.

Game: Can't pick one. The block of games that contained Poland vs Canada, Greece vs France, and Germany vs Ukraine were all great. Really good stuff from all those teams.

Team: Greece. Tempting to pick Poland because of their strong result against Canada or Germany because they played well. But Greece produced the most surprising result. Came in with a solid game plan and stuck with it. Soaked up the pressure and scored whenever they got a chance. Never trailed throughout the entire game. Greece are for real!

Player: David Patterson - Germany. Bossed the show throughout the entire game against Ukraine. Gave Ukraine fits at the back as they could not get the ball off him. Scored the first goal with a great lobbing effort over a huge keeper.

Tackle: ZACH Cabylis - Greece. This was a football hit. I was commentating when this things happened. Wow, he sprinted 20 yards and put his shoulder into the poor France player. You could hear it from where I was sitting. Certainly deserving of the yellow card he got. Props to the France player for getting up after that one.

Goal: Greece's 4th. Missed the goal scorer but it was great. Broke down the right side and looked like he had run himself out of room only to unleash a devastating blast that nearly took off the France keepers head. Could have been Patterson's lob or Sarazen's nice flick and hit for Poland. But I'll stick with this one.

Gaffe: Greece's defense after they scored. Every time Greece scored they forgot that they had to defend after. Never have I seen a team get scored on so quickly, and so often right after they've scored.

Save: Michal Bandula - Poland. Not really a specific save but more the entire body of work. Another terrific performance. A few good ones again today. Greece keeper had everything stick to him didn't let out a single rebound so he deserves a shout too.

My apologies to Zach Cabylis', didn't get his name right in my broadcast. Was not intentional! Check back today as I will my Best of for the entire 1st week. Peace.

My apologies for not updating this last night but I didn't see any of the games.

Team: Poland/Colombia. A toss up for me as Poland came from behind to win 2-1 over a strong Ukraine side. Anytime that can come from behind and score two goals on Kevin is a strong side. Colombia also shocked us by beating Sudan 2-1. Not sure anyone saw this coming except me. I called this and I want props for it!

Game: All sorts of nominees. Ukraine/Poland, Germany/Jamaica and Colombia/Sudan were all great but I'm picking Colombia/Sudan. That's the most shocking result to me and the place was packed with everyone there to see Sudan.

Player: Kevin Holness. David Brown scored 4 for ROI and that would normally put you top of the list however Holness put on a real show today. Not sure the average fan would appreciate what he did but it was brilliant.

Save: Colombia. They could not do anything wrong defensively today. So many balls were cleared off the goal line that you would not believe it. Made for an exciting game and I still don't know how the goals stayed out.

Goal: Lee Mooney - ROI. Although it was the one that knocked ROI into double digits, it was an absolute beauty. Could not have connected with it any sweeter.

Gaffe: The poster that is put up of me. That's terrible.

Youth Boys: Canada vs Ukraine

Colombia vs Northern Ireland

Obviously the game to watch is Ukraine vs Poland. Both had strong showings in and their first games and both really need to get 3 points here to keep pace with Canada. This will be an interesting one. Poland are a fast, hard working bunch who out performed what was supposed to be a strong German side. Ukraine only beat Scotland so they don't have a tough game under their belt. However, I think tactically they are the superior team. Ukraine will sit back and soak up pressure and eventually Poland will commit too many guys forward leaving them susceptible at the back. Prediction 3-1 Ukraine.

It is not going to be easy to pick a best from this day as I found myself wishing that the balcony was just a story or 2 hire. I won't specify why.

Team: England (Youth Girls). Can't really believe I wrote that, but it's deserved. Put together a performance which enabled them to get a big 3 points. Obviously France and Canada were great but that was expected. England had to work harder earn their win.

Game: England vs Germany (Youth Girls). By far the most entertaining of the night. A close hard fought game which was won in the closing minutes. Yep.

Player: Brett Bachelu - Forward - France. You score 4 goals and you pretty much automatically make this list. Finished with authority each and every time. Solid performance.

Save: Tristan Manz - Keeper - France. Dove splendidly to his left to not only stop the ball, which was headed to the top corner, but also managed hold on to it. Edwin Van Der Sar-esque. May actually have been the only save of the night.

Goal: Germany number 15 form Youth Girls. A lobbing effort that caught the keeper off the line. Really nice. Scholan deserves a mention for his effort for France. Lots of goals, not a lot of beauties.

Gaffe: Italys number 24. Kneed the ball over his own keeper magnificently. Splendid shot, wrong net. Honorable mention to any player who kicks the ball out of bounds on the same sideline you are kicking in from. That's poor.

Peeve: Parking. Parking was awful tonight. I get the Norway's curling team wears neat colored pants but how are so many people going to these games. And if you are going to a curling match how are you in any shape to drive home?

Quote: "Judging by their shorts this is France's basketball team. Imagine how their soccer team would have done"

Team: Sudan. Of course Sudan, I hyped them since their first game and they lived up to every bit of the hype. Down 3-2 to score 5 unanswered and these were 5 great goals which they earned. They didn't come Sudan-easy. I was going nuts and so was everyone else. The only reason everyone was going so crazy is because El Salvador is a great team and not sure anyone saw this coming.

Player: Tong Tong for Sudan. Scored two goals and not two poor goals either. Two absolute beauties. Wow!

Goal: Number 8 on Italy Womens scored a pretty nice goal but it did not compare to Tong Tong's absolute rip. Down 3-1 he gathered the ball just inside the opposing half and unleashed a shot, no keeper would have saved, to the top right corner. Candidate for goal of the tournament. Completely turned the game around.

Save: This is a tie. Serbia's keeper made a sick save on a ball lobbed over his head which he somehow managed to punch over. Elsewhere, Will Torres, for El Salvador, cleared the ball off the line with his head on a Sudan free kick. Both were extremely impressive.

Gaffe: The pass by the Serbian number 4 to allow Norway's third. Collected the ball from the keeper and then slides it into the middle. Which team are you on?

Question: A player on the Serbian team clearly used a hand ball in the box. It was almost certainly unintentional but if he is doing his best starfish impression shouldn't that be a penalty?

Celebration: Each one of the goals in the Sudan- El Salvador game was celebrated well. Props to all of them.

The Sudan - El Salvador game may have been the best WCP game I ever seen. Congrats to both teams for putting on such a show. If you did not make it down there SHAME ON YOU!

Its El Salvador Night down at the facility with their Youth Girls, Womens, and Mens teams all in action the El Salvadorian fans should be out in full force. Serbia and Norway are in there too.

Not to disregard the importance but I want to get to the game that I believe everyone wants too see. El Salvador - Sudan. You can see my entire Group A preview here but keep in mind a lot has changed since then. Sudan put in the performance of the tournament so far against Laos but it wasn`t enough to earn them a win. So now it`s due or die time. El Salvador is a very strong, and skilled side that will see much of the ball. Sudan on the other hand is fast as heck and everyone in their defense seems to have 40 inch verticals. They will win everything in the air at the back. If El Salvador does as Laos did and gets into playing long ball then this is going to be an extremely tough game for them. Sudan will need to capitalize on more of their chances and I`m not too sure they are capable of doing that. I expect at least 2 goals from set pieces and a 4-3 El Salvador win. Prove me wrong Sudan!

Now on to the other big game of the day. Champions League Man U - Chelsea from Stamford Bridge. Kickoff is at 12:45 so if you have to work tell them you`re leaving early and if they say no, then quit (don`t actually). Point is you don`t want to miss this one. I am predicting a 2-2 draw as Man U have not won at Stamford Bridge in their last 10 games and a draw would be a great result for them. Also Sir Alex, please play Berba. (I know this almost certainly won`t happen.)

Team: Greece. Ukraine Women's team looked very strong but everyone knew they were going to win. Greece, fueled on by wanting to prove Julio wrong, came out with another good showing. Their next game is against France and that will be the real measure of how good Greece is. I hope they are up for it.

Goal: Have to go with the Colombia ripper. A shot from the top left of the box that hit the crossbar and went in. Really nice actually.

Player: I think Crowdis from Ukraines Womens got 2 goals so I'll go with her. A brace is always the sign of a solid performance. Number 3 for Greece had a good performance as well but not the goals to go with it.

Gaffe and Overreaction:
How the Austria player managed to head the ball off the post, have it come back to him and then head it off the crossbar is beyond me. And then the roll around on the ground after the miss yikes. Honorable mention to the Botswana player who missed at the end of his game.

Tackle:

Tyson Piniach. Austria. Actually managed to forget this somehow my first time through. The Austria player got tangled up and decided to give the Colombia player a little punch. Not a tackle I know, but anything that earns you a red card is worth mentioning.

Celebration:
The player who scored Greece's second goal celebrated the only way he knew how, by tensing every muscle in his body and running super fast. I am LOLing while I write this. I want Greece to do well just to see that again.

Awesomeness: Botswana player who lines up for a wall facing his own net. Thought it was a one time thing but nope. This could be a big trend setter. No one likes getting hit in the gonads.

Tuesday Nights Scores. France edition

So, I was driving to the facility tonight look over to my right and what do I see? This. Cripes the hype is everywhere you look. What's next?

Youth Girls:
Germany 1 El Salvador 1: A reasonable lobbing effort for Germanys first. Not exactly match of the day stuff.

Womens:
Ukraine 8 Italy 1: Another snooze fest. Italy was just not in the same class as Ukraine. A couple of decent long range efforts for goals including good strike from Michelle Anderson from outside the box but nothing too spectacular.

Mens:
Austria 2 Columbia 1: A really scrappy game both technically and physically couldn't have been more than 3 passes strung together. Quite a few death tackles out there led by Tyson Piniach. A scorcher from the Columbia player that flew into the top right.

Greece 2 Botswana 1: A slightly less scrappy game. Fairly even for the most part however Greece pulled through when they needed too. Botswana had a chance at the end but that shot ended up almost hitting the moon.

Tonights Games/PFA Shortlist

Not a whole lot of good games happening tonight. A first look at Austria Mens will be alright to see. We all remember their game against France last year was one of the best of the tournament. Maybe Botswana - Greece will turn into a good game. Greece will want to continue to prove they are serious contender. Will need to put in quite a few goals to prove so. Great supporters for all the teams involved tonight though so it should be a lively atmosphere.

Now for what I really want to rant about. The shortlist for PFA Player of the Year for the English Premier League was released today. On the list are Charlie Adam, Gareth Bale, Samir Nasri, Scott Parker, Nemanja Vidic and Carlos Tevez. Where are Nani and Dimitar Berbatov??? I know Charlie Adam is a feel good story but come on. Berbatov is the league's leading goal scorer having scored more goals than Carlos Tevez in less games. Not to mention that none of his goals have come from free kicks or the penalty spot. Nani has more goals and than both Bale and Nasri and more assists than both of them combined. What does Player of the Year mean if the best players don't even make the short list?

I didn't see too many games so please help me out people! I won't be offended if you correct me.

Team of the Day:
Afghanistan. Not a lot to work with as the games were not a joy to watch but a really big win for Afghanistan. They are still going to be in tough against the rest of their pool but this gives them hope. That group is a free for all. Unless you are France and headed to the final for sure.

Goal:

A couple candidates. I did score a rocket header but I will have to concede to David Brown. His lob of the Portugal keeper was both spectacular and unnecessary. Looked great though, even with Reis trying to steal it.

Player:

Like I said I only watched one game. I would nominate Brett Levis for his 3 goals but that would seem pretty biased. Let me know who you think!

Save:
The posts. Seriously did they get bigger? Posts were getting hit like crazy all night.

Gaffe:

Coming to watch. After the action packed weekend its a little tough to live up to the excitement they created. Games were blowouts except for the Afghanistan - Italy game.

Tackle: I will go with the Nigeria - Greece game from the night before. They put in 2 days worth of slide tackles. So no need to add more.

Laos apparently looked good so I don't want to detract from them. I just didn't watch the game. This is where you guys come in to correct me. Let me know what should actually be on here!

Team of the day:

Poland. They came out hungry for a win and not only did they win, they annihilated Germany. A really strong showing by a team that everybody underrated. Well done. Have to mention Greece in here too. A team everyone (myself included) wrote off. Greece is now well positioned to make playoffs. I was impressed.

Goal:
Easy to single out, the goal of the day came from Nigeria's #11. A shot from behind half that came down just below the Greece keepers outstretched arms. A beauty and it got them back into the game, for a while.

Player:
Poland's keeper, Michel Bandula was phenomenal and made a lot of great saves. I won't say that Poland would have lost if they hadn't had him but if your teams strategy is "put it on net" he's not the guy you want to face.

Save:

Where to start? Bandula was brilliant. Probably had 5 saves worth mentioning however I'll go with his whole body of work. He keeps playing that well and he'll be on ROI next year. Kidding.

Gaffe:

Nigeria's goalkeeper. If you watched the game you would agree with me. Unfortunately tonight Nigeria's goalkeeping was not at the level they needed it to be at. Honorable mention for some horrible reffing decisions including an almost missed penalty and a text book hand ball by the Nigerian keeper.

Tackle:

Reis Cooper's brutal two footed studs up lunge against England. That's a straight red in any other game. If the ball leaves the guys foot 10 seconds ago and you're still lunging, you're probably too late. Might have been a record for amount of slide tackles set in the Nigeria-Greece game.

Here is my recap of the best of the day for Saturday:

Team of the Day:
Sudan. Can their be anyone else? The only close game there was. Sudan was far and away the surprise team of the day. Should have beat Laos and are the most athletic team ever. I swear everyone on their team has a 40 inch vertical and could out run a deer. My new favorite.

Goal:

Tavis vs. Jamaica - A couple candidates to choose from including Bryan Murrells winner and Irelands great passing move. But I will go with Tavis's goal against Jamaica. Takes on 2 defenders, leaves them in his dust and scoops the keeper. Beauty.

Player:

Again some options. Tavis had a great game for Canada as did Levis for ROI but I have to go with number 11 from Sudan. Didn't quite get his name but was all over the field and should have scored the tying goal. Had all sorts of moves.

Save:

Evan Campbell. Laos' keeper held them in the game. Not too many brilliant saves but a lot of important ones. Especially a huge save that came with two minutes left denying every fan a Sudan equalizer.

Gaffe:
Jamaicas whole team. Wow, who saw that coming. Canada is not an offensive powerhouse by any means. This was a drubbing, Jamaica may as well have not shown up, the game would have been closer. A lot of hype and no show.

Tackle:
Always a few dirty tackles but none nearly as dirty as the one the guy from Sudan out in against Boun. Boun you are lucky to have a head.

Debate Saturday

We all know that group D is considered to be the group of death, and should have the most exciting games in the group stage. But lets break it down even further than that. This group starts off with Canada battling Jamaica on opening day. Both of these teams have a serious chance at making it to the knock out stage but those plans could be altered depending on the outcome of this game. That leaves us with the question, which team would be hurt more by a loss?

Kirk's pick: Jamaica would be more hurt by a loss. Based on the schedule alone, Jamaica starts off with Canada, and follows up with Germany. Toughest possible way to start out in this group. If Jamaica does in fact lose to Canada, they will have very little room for error in the rest of the group stage. There will be a lot of pressure on them to beat Germany. Starting out with an 0-2 record could be fatal, and would almost surely deny entry to the knockout stage. All the exhibition games will be meaningless if they can't continue their winning ways early in the tournament. These first 2 games will show us if Jamaica is a contender or a pretender.

Mike's pick: Canada would be more hurt by the loss tonight. They are not a team that is good from playing from behind even within the group and they know how important it is to stay competitive point-wise within their pool. Canada will be desperate to prove they belong in in the elite class of teams given how much flak they take. The last time Canada place so well they dropped all the way to 15th. They need to prove they can be consistently good. The other point about Canda is that their style of play causes a lot of their games to close. A fluke goal here or there could lead too dropped points later. Those points could mean the difference between advancing and bombing out.

The Game: Canada vs. Jamaica - Our first look at the group of death. A loss will have either team on the brink of elimination. Tons to be learned from this game. Canada will of course want to keep their stranglehold on Jamaica.

Match ups to watch :

Korthius vs Jarvis - The best defender in the league versus the Korthius. We know Jarvis will be all over him. It's not going to be the type of game Kortho loves, he will have to work for it. As good of battle as you will see. Please watch!

Tavis vs Jamaicas Defense - Canada's game plan is based on the counter. It worked brilliantly in their exhibition game versus El Salvador. If I were Jamaica I would try and slow it down by fouling Tavis like it was going out of style. Also Canada is extremely well coached.

Jamaica vs. History - Jamaica hasn't beat Canada in forever. This is a mountain for them. If they can pull of a win confidence will be flowing. Otherwise their in trouble.

The Game : Ireland vs Germany (Womens) - New comers Ireland (my personal favourite) looked very impressive in their exhibition games. Last year runners-up will have something to prove. However Ireland may prove to be too strong, let the band wagoning begin. I'm driving.

Things We Love About Soccer/WCP

One day away from the tournament so its time for us to remember why we all love it so much. Here's the list of the things we love:

1. Lung Busting Runs - That player who has just made a 40 yard run forward sees their team turn the ball over and instead of pouting sprints 60 yards the other way to win the ball back. Love that guy.

2. Underdogs - Everyone loves to cheer for a team that has no business even being in the game. ie. Norway vs ROI (I hate that example). The idea that on any given day a bunch of no names could walk on the field and beat one of the big teams is what makes every game worth watching.

3. Inventive Celebrations - There definitely needs to be more celebrations in this tournament. I tire of the same old centipede, shoe shine, ball grenade routines. I challenge you people to get creative! I will personally buy a case for the best celebration I see. Lets make it happen people. Here is some inspiration. Though if you celebrate like that after a penalty its pretty lame.

4. People Not Paying Attention Getting Hit With The Ball - Alright I probably shouldn't love this but I think secretly we all do a little. The person who is standing behind the net chatting to someone instead of watching the game gets hit by the ball. Yeah that's right there's a soccer game going on. What justice. And for some reason the person is always holding a drink. It will happen again this year. Watch for it.

5. The New Blog - Yep, this is nothing more than a shameless plug. Tell your friends.

6. Nutmegs - That defender who just gets way too tight to his man and is left grasping at straws as it goes through his legs is priceless. Not to mention when its accompanied by the entire crowd yelling "Ooohhh!". Not so great when it happens to you.

7. Post Game Dressing Room Sessions - By far the best way for a team to bond. Sit around with the team and discuss the game and the goings-on from the night before over a nice cold coke. What could be better?

8. People Watching From Up Top - Hanging out over the railing and being able to see everyone who comes and goes. I know a few guys who particularly enjoy this. And when you finally see someone you know you have that awkward yelling conversation from up top to the main level because you're both too lazy to use the stairs. Maybe that's just me.

9. The Rumor Mill - Trying to decipher who is playing where and which rumors are true is half the fun of this tournament. So much speculation and hardly any reliable sources makes knowing what is true and what's not nearly impossible.

10. The Final/Cabaret - The must see soccer event of the year. The place is packed and the tension is palpable. Always the best game of the tournament. Add in that everyone then goes to the Lazy Owl where you can't walk to steps without bumping into someone you know. It's just like Cheers but with more dancing.

Things We Hate About Soccer/WCP

We decided to put together a list of a few things we hate both on and off the field. Here is what we came up with: (Again this is just to poke fun, don't make me regret this.)

1. Oscar Worthy Players - I think this is universally hated. When a guy is running with hardly a man around him and he goes down like he's been shot by a sniper. This is usually followed by 2.5 rolls on the ground, 30 secs on the sideline and then a 10 second hobble. Brutal.

2. Overly Acrobatic Goalkeeping - So annoying when the ball is headed directly towards a keeper and instead of catching it he dives outrageously and punches it, usually out of bounds. Particularly annoying when its your keeper.

3. Popped Collars, Low Socks, Rolled Shorts - We are not at a club (and even if we were), low socks look sloppy, and find a pair that fit. Nothing more needs to be said.

4. Tirades On How To Improve Your Team - I think everyone has been wandering around the facility during WCP only to be stopped by some random person (usually slightly intoxicated) and given a list of things that could improve your team. Everything from tactics to formation to what you should be done with "that guy who plays on the wing." Actually maybe this should be on the love list.

5. Unnecessary Stepovers - Yeah, there is a time and place for a stepover but its not when you are playing center back and it's definitely not when the closest player is 7 yards away and you are planning to play the ball backwards.

6. Post Game Line-Up Handshakes & Hip-Hip-Hoorays (at senior level only) - Now I am not trying to endorse poor sportsmanship but there is just something so emasculating about grown men cheering hip-hip hooray at the end of a game. We already shake hands before the game. When the final whistle goes, find a couple players on the other team, shake their hand and get on with it. No one will be offended.

7. Beer Lineups - Now I personally have never been in one but rumor has it they can grow quite long. If you want a beer for a 5:00 game better hit that line up around 3:00. Oh and bring your own chair you'll want to sit down.

8. The Crickets - The Crickets that get played over the PA system at the tournament. Once or twice a weekend is fine but they insist on doing it once or twice every 10 minutes. I really hate this one.

9. Consistently Inconsistent Refereeing - You know how it is, one game you can't touch anyone without a call going against you, the next you would have to be coding out there for the referee to stop it. Great for fans, frustrating as heck for players.

10. Seating - I have never actually had to watch a final but it usually looks pretty packed out there. Nothing that can really be done about this but standing room only is not an ideal set up.

I've managed to narrow it down to seven can't-miss games. Obviously their will be lots of other great games during the tournament but in order to save space I am only listing seven. These seven are listed starting with what I feel will be the most epic game of the round robin and moving downwards from there.

I have decided to pick out the best games of the round robin to ensure that nobody misses out on these potentially great matches. There is not much to pick from on the Women's side simply because their aren't many teams and even less good team. But I have picked out the three which I believe will be best.

Ireland vs Germany - Saturday April 2nd 7:00pm

Then what we are calling the SUPER SOCCER SATURDAY DOUBLE HEADER:

Germany vs Chile - Saturday April 16th 5:00pm

Ukraine vs England - Saturday April 16th 6:00pm

The Top 7 WCP Players Who Would Never Wear A Snood

The inability to wear a snood is something possessed only by the toughest players in the soccer community. Players who would rather turn blue or lose a digit than ever admit to being cold. The hardmen of soccer.
That being said here are my Top 7 WCP Players Who Would Never Wear a Snood:

1. Mark Wernikowski - Defender/ROI - A real tough guy who could TEACH a lot of players a thing or two about getting stuck in. Plus if you can grow an awesome beard in a day there really no need for a snood.

2. Tyler Dorosh - Defender/Ukraine - Still probably have a few cleat marks in my legs from playing against Tyler. It helps that I am not sure Yorkton is fashionable enough to have snoods. Maybe Andy can fill us in?

3. Reis Cooper - Midfielder/Norway - For some strange reason Reis reminds me of Joey Barton. The kind of guy who is out in a snow storm training in shorts and a t-shirt. Yikes.

4. Bryan Murrell - Defender/Laos - Any player the size of Bryan has no business wearing a snood. Not to mention that Bryan already stands out above everyone out there as it is.

5. Kevin Holness- Midfielder/Jamaica - This is more hopeful than anything because I could actually envision Kev rocking a snood. But if he did the the next thing we'd see is 400 kids running around in AC emblazoned snoods. Not to mention the worker bees. I will pass on that.

6. Benno Looft - Defender/ROI - There is absolutely no way that Benno would ever wear a snood. Even though he is quite European I don't think the man can feel pain. Not going to find the need for a snuggly blanket around his neck.

7. Any Cabylis - All positions/Greece - Seriously can anyone imagine one of these guys walking into a sports store and asking to be directed to the snood section? Not a chance.

Honorable Mention:
Mike Collins - Midfielder/ROI - They seem like they would be annoying to wear and frankly I am not sure I could squeeze one on over my ego. Not willing to try anyway.

The Alcohol Situation

I have spoken to the authorities and beer will be allowed on the upper mezzanine. They are still awaiting a response as to whether or not it will be allowed on the main floor. You may purchase a delicious beverage up in Sellinger Corner (the far corner of the upper mezzanine) at the reasonable cost of $10.50 a schooner.

In unrelated news, backpacks will be allowed in the facility.

Update: Alcohol will not be allowed on the ground floor of the facility. Better get there early.

Top 7 WCP Players Who Would Wear A Snood

For those who are not aware what a snood is here is a very brief lesson. Snoods are essentially scarfs worn by soccer players for cold whether games. However, recently they have been banned by FIFA because they were becoming for of a fashion statement than a functional accessory. Snoods are typically worn by the skillful and flashy as opposed to the hard men. That being said here are Top 7 players who would be most likely wear a snood if they could:
(Keep in mind this is meant to be a bit of fun. Please don't get carried away with this.)

1. Adam Chomos - GK/Jamaica - Not sure but Adam may be the only player in the tournament who actually currently sports a snood. Always seems to be cold even in that balmy facility I am sure he would wear a winter jacket if it didn't impede his mobility.

2. Braden Husdal - Defender/Norway - Just the kind of guy who seems like he should have one and if it were to ride up and muffle him on the field at all I think we would all be thankful.

3. Kevin Murphy - Midfielder/France - Any englishman willing to celebrate by bowing down to a flag of Zidane seems like a prime snood wearer to me.

4. Jerson Hamilton - Striker/El Salvador - If I came from the beaches of Mexico to playing on a snow covered pitch in Saskatchewan I would be wearing a snood too.

5. Kashmir Bahia - Midfielder/France - Let's face we are always one snood-clad Beckham appearance away from seeing Kash in one too.

6. Jordan Peto - GK/Germany - Plays in a position where getting cold is always an option. Plus he is often seen in an Arsenal jersey and I am pretty sure snoods were part of their uniform for awhile.

7. Alvaro Campos - Midfielder/El Salvador - Though Alvi is a known collar-popper, which a snood would surely impede, Alvi would certainly wear a snood. Even if it was only to anger everyone.

Honorable Mention:
Felipe Dos Santos - Midfielder/Canada - Lots of clamoring for him to be added to the list and I did think of him and how he wears leggings well playing indoor. However, Felipe is such a stickler for the rules that he would never wear something banned by FIFA. In fact he would be the first to report you if you wore a snood.

2011 Mens (Group A)

Group A appears to be the second hardest of the four groups. Laos are last years champs and there are rumors abound that El Salvador has strengthened their team. Northern Ireland is a team known to pull off the occasional upset (trust me I know) and Austria gave France a tough battle last year. Columbia and Sudan round off an intriguing group.

Laos:

Last years champs will look to repeat which is not an easy thing to do. It's cliche but they will be getting everyone's best shot.

Strengths:

Tactically they are very strong, I mean any team that actually practices during the tournament better be organized. Laos is as quick of a team as you will come across and play a very high tempo game. Hardworking and technically solid. Would be easy to say they are undersized but do surprisingly well in the aerial battle.

Weaknesses:

If they have lost Northey it is the hardest hit any team will take it the entire tournament. That guy demands loads of attention which can now be distributed elsewhere. Center mid may also have taken a hit.

Player to Watch:

Boun Phoummabout - Winger - If Northey is out Boun will be expected to saddle a lot more of the load. Not sure anyone is capable of doing that but if I had to pick someone out it'd be Boun.

Odds of Winning:

5/1

El Salvador:

Champions the very first year the WCP Cup existed have failed to be able to make it back to the finals. A team that loves to have fun and that is evident in their play. Celebrate on!

Strengths:

Technically one of the best teams, if not the best, in the entire tournament. Don't want to get caught in a 1 v 1 situation with almost anyone on this side. They are an offensive threat every time they get the ball.

Weaknesses:

The cost of all out attack is that you are often prone to the counter. With so much dribbling they sometimes forget to shoot. Not sure about their goalkeeping situation? Something to watch.

Player to Watch:

Josip Coric - Forward - A natural goalscorer who will ripple the twine at least a few times. Will show up in game shape.

Odds of Winning:

4-1

Columbia:

A team that has never really come close to advancing to knockout stages but has played in some very memorable games.

Strengths:

Have a couple solid young players who are willing to run and will shoot from everywhere. Dangerous from set pieces, keepers will be called into action. Driven on by tremendous fan support.

Weaknesses:

Heavily reliant on just a few players who will be gassed by the time this tournament is done. Suspect defense and goalkeeping will mean they will need goals galore to keep up.

Player to Watch:

Paco - Midfielder - A swift footed player who just needs a yard of space to let loose a shot. Their main set piece taker I would assume.

Odds of Winning:

90/1

Austria

Another team which has never made it through to the knockout stages but has played some very good teams into tight games. Not a team to be overlooked.

Strengths:

Bring your shinguards because even if Austria don't beat you, you will certainly know they were out there. A powerful, fast team that can score out of nowhere. Skill is underrated.

Weaknesses:

Sometimes can be too physical and their tempers will flare causing lapses in concentration. Not the deepest squad you will find. Have lost their keeper so that is a major cause for concern.

Player to Watch:

Ben Wolfmueller - Defender/Mid - Not as consistent as he used to be but can still be a dominant player when he wants to. Tough as nails and has a cannon of a left boot.

Odds of Winning:
75-1

Northern Ireland:

Have previously made it to the knock out stages and didn't look out of place. Are in tough to repeat that feat.

Strengths:

The group is led by tournament front runners ROI and Norway, both of which have won the coveted WCP Cup in the past. The rest of the group consists of underdogs Serbia, England, Sierra Leone, and Portugal. Although this group appears to be a piece of cake for ROI and Norway, don't count anybody out. Could easily see someone pull off an upset.

Republic of Ireland:

Three time champions have been in the last 5 finals. Have only lost 3 games ever.

Strengths:

Have worked hard on recruiting, resulting in more stars in an already star studded lineup. Two strikers who are known to score special goals when called upon. Have bolstered their wings.

Weaknesses:

Almost whole team is from Saskatoon, not even I know who will show up for each game. Team is a blizzard away from forfeiture. Will have not played together at all going into the tournament.

Player to Watch:

David Brown - Striker - Known for his clinical finishing which often verges on the spectacular (see last years bicycle kick and goal vs France).

Have never advanced to the knockout stage, and appears they are in a rebuilding stage from the original England team.

Strengths:

Youthful resilience and a short memory will serve this team well. Hard working and being in shape will definitely be a plus.

Weaknesses:

Inexperience at a high level will hurt this teams chances of being competitive to go along with a lack of skill. Work is needed overall.

Player to Watch:

Andrew Kitchen - Defender - keeps things organized at the back. Calm and collected under pressure.

A team on the verge of being a threat. Every year the talk about this team is their Winnipeg talent, and we are still waiting for them to show up. A few new players in the mix will help Serbia's chances in group B.

Strengths:

Have the ability to keep games close and are never to be counted out. Have good youth coming up that will help this team build a solid base for the future.

Weaknesses:

Do not have a well known striker to score goals. Suffer defensive breakdowns that lead to playing from behind. The playing time is distributed too evenly to keep them competitive, could be the downfall of this team.

Player to Watch:

Ivan - Midfielder - good touch and knowledge for game. Can distribute the ball well and will need to play amazing for Serbia to have success.

Strengths:

Weaknesses:

Not organized at the back. Lost 2 of their strongest players. Attacks are often over elaborate. Goakeeper has tendency to let in some weak shots.

Player to Watch:

Justin Freitas - Midfield - Has a low center of gravity making it tough for defenders to push him off the ball. Has a good shot if he can get enough time to release it.

Very confident coming into this tournament that they will make it past the group stage. This team is still flying high on confidence from winning the tournament 4 years ago.

Strengths:

They have a never say die attitude and are all blue collar hard working players. Can manage to keep games close no matter who they are playing. Have a well balanced attack which gets goals from almost everyone on the roster.

Weaknesses:

Not the most skilled team in the tournament. Outspoken captain may lead to fans cheering against them, which will give opponents a boost.

Group C is led by tournament favorite France, with the rest being a toss up for second place. Every game will be a battle in this group, whoever can play the most consistent will be awarded a birth in the knock out stage.

France:

Had a disappointing loss in the semi's for the second consecutive year. Will be looking to get over that hump and make it to the finals.

Strengths:

Team has solid depth at every position especially in the midfield. They are made up of 100% Regina players, so are familiar with each others playing styles. Great though often angry goalkeeping.

Weaknesses:

Have failed to win a big game when they need to. Lack elite quality on the wings.

Player to Watch:

Brett Bachelu - Mid/Striker - creates goal scoring opportunities and finishes many of them himself. Has had success at every level he has played.

Botswana:

Has consistently improved every year since their existence. One of the most enjoyable teams to watch with fantastic fan support.

Strengths:

Very quick on the pitch, speed is definitely one of their main assets. The fact that they have been improving year after year means this year should be no different. Look for them to present a serious challenge to everyone in group C.

Weaknesses:

At times become wreckless and take many fouls. Will need to remain disciplined. Also will need to find a way to score more goals or at least create chances.

David Chabi - Midfielder - Has a fantastic touch on the ball and is a real joy to watch. Fan Favorite!

Looking to improve from last years tournament, Greece will have to battle hard to be successful in this group. Several years removed from making it to the knock out stage.

Strengths:

Arguably the most physical team in the tournament. Teamwork is what makes this team successful. Greece is full of confidence that they can make it out of this group.

Weaknesses:

Although they are very athletic, their technique is not the most refined. Their physical play often becomes excessive, which leads to fouls, free kicks and cards.

Player to Watch:

George Korolis - midfielder - Very quick player with good ball skills. Will be the key to Greece's midfield.

Italy:

Continue to enter a team with very little turnover. Have never really been a contender, but have the possibility to maybe upset someone in this group.

Strengths:

Have been practicing hard which should help their product on the field. If they continue to work hard, this often translates into better results on the field.

Where do I begin? Depth is not a strong point and have shown no improvement on depth leading up to this year. They lost their goalie to Serbia which will not help.

Player to Watch:

Nestor Garzona - Midfield - Solid midfielder who will be one of the bright spots on this team. Could probably use a couple more of him.

Nigeria:

Nigeria is on the verge of being considered a contender. Will need to play consistently to make it out of this group.

Strengths:

Nigeria plays a very fast paced game that some teams can't keep up with. Great work ethic, with their wingers going back and forth all day. They have really started to come together as a team and will be very tough to beat when they are on their game.

Weaknesses:

They lack technical ability, this leads to many missed scoring opportunities. Do not react well to pressure at the back, and patchy goalkeeping often has dire consequences.

Player to Watch:

Emmanuel Otitoju - Striker - A massive wrecking force up front, physical specimen is lethal if he can turn and fire. Defenders be prepared to play most the game in his shadow.

Strengths:

Finishing. Lack the personnel with consistent ability to put the ball in the net. Will need to score on their chances in order to be successful.

Noor Mitri - Keeper - Solid keeper that brings much needed leadership to this team. Has had success with other teams in this tournament, and has experience in big games.

Group D is by far the most difficult group to make it out of. Considered to be the group of death, only 2 of these teams will live to make it to the knock-out stage. Every game in this group will be important into determining the final standings and none of these teams are a walk in the park. Mark your calendar for these games, you definitely do not want to miss out!

Poland

Poland have made it out of their group the past two years and are confident they can do it again.

Strengths:

They play together as a team and move the ball around the pitch very well. They are good defensively and have a steady keeper. A team that cannot be taken lightly.

Weaknesses:

Do not have a consistent finisher and have lost one of their top players in Brett Levis. Goals will need to be scored to keep up with their opponents in group D, where they will come from is yet to be seen.

Player to Watch:

Aleks Wosik - Midfielder - Strong on the ball, plays with good pace. A good shot but aim is inconsistent.

Finished dead last in 2010, the only place to go is up!

Strengths:

Have been having alot of exhibition games and are developing chemistry with each other. They should be in game shape and are going to work very hard to cause a stir in this group.

Tactics will need to be strong to make up for area's in which they lack. Not sure they will be. Probably do not have the depth to be a contender in this group.

Flying under the radar this year, have been potential contenders in the past, but have not lived up to the hype.

Strengths:

Most of the team plays with each other on the Yorkton mens team. The Yorkton shell is a well developed defensive tactic, which has been notably hard for even the best teams to break down. Combine this with a great keeper (may or may not be playing) and you have a chance at making it out of this group.

Weaknesses:

Goal scoring, goal scoring, goal scoring. Where oh where will these goals come from? Ukraine in the past has failed to make it out of their groups due to too many draws. Full points are a must to make it out of this group.

Player to Watch:

Steve Delong - Attacking Midfielder- If the goals are going to come, look his way. Hard working midfielder is one of the keys to this teams success.

Canada:

One time finalist, Canada finished an impressive 4th at last years tournament. Arguably pre-tournament favorites to make it out of this group.

Strengths:

Not a team renowned for their gorgeous soccer, but their tactics are more than effective. A very hard working defensive unit that always plays as a team and never relies on one person alone. This team will be tough to break down. If they develop a lead on you, it will definitely be an uphill climb for their opponent.

Weaknesses:

That being said, they are missing a game-breaker that can score goals in crunch time. They can work the ball up the field but don't have that reliable option up front.

Player to Watch:

Tavis Workman-Winger- Speedy with very quick feet. Look for him to be an offensive threat. Can shoot with both feet

Jamaica

Perennial under achiever. Jamaica didn't make it out of the group of death last year and has the misfortune of being in the group of death once again this year. Won't be happy just making it out of this group.

Strengths:

Will be as well organized tactically as any other team in the tournament. In the midfield they have fast wingers that will be working hard on both ends of the field. A midfield containing Korthius and Holness will be terribly hard to contain.

Weaknesses:

Not good defensively. Putting pressure on their backs causes them to panic and could lead to costly mistakes. When attacking, they don't always make the best of their opportunities. Depth could possibly be an issue.

Player to Watch:

Mark Korthius- Centre Midfielder- One of the best players in the tournament. Big, strong and technically gifted and has a left foot second to none. As competitive of player as they come.

Made it out of the group of death last year and has a good shot at doing it again. Not a team you want to face in the knock out stages.

Strengths:

Very physical squad that battles hard from start to finish. Physicality will give skilled teams a tough time getting comfortable. Very direct offense that is more concerned about effectiveness than style and looks to shoot from anywhere and everywhere. Also has two top notch keepers.

Weaknesses:

All out attack leads to defensive breakdowns and leaves them vulnerable on the counter attack. Physical style of play can land them in trouble with referees. A free kick specialists dream.

Patterson twins-Midfielder- They are as difficult to contain as they are to tell apart. These 2 players are talented midfielders that are dangerous everywhere on the pitch.

Past champions and last years runner's up. Looking to avenge last years defeat and might have the squad to do it. Defence is second to none.

Player to Watch

Laura Guzik is the anchor on this solid defensive lineup and rarely makes mistakes.
Shayla Kapila is an up and coming star to watch.
Meagan Cormeir is another good dribbler, she beats players most of the time in 1 v 1's, has a good shot, and should never be left open in the middle...always needs to be marked tightly.

Ireland:

I watched them lay a thrashing on Poland this week However, In their first ever WCP Cup game they have the unenviable task of having to play last years runners up Germany. Ireland is a team whos strength resides in the middle of the park with some very strong midfield play. Their game against Chile could decide which team comes out in this group. I personally think that will be Ireland though I may be slightly biased.

Player to Watch

Ireland have a reliable keeper in former Cougar Amanda Stith. A solid defense which includes Kaci Manz and Naomi Picard and a terrific midfield trio which includes Shelly Krahenbil, Zoe Threlfall, and Taylor Bacala.

Though rumour has is Chile may not be as strong as it has been in past years. Chile is never to be taken lightly and always a top contender. Has incredible fan support and they are the heartbeat to this team.

Mackenzie Bulych. This intelligent striker links attack with midfield, and weighs in with her fair share of goals.
Catherine Collins is always steady and works hard all over the pitch.

Ukraine:

Defending champions from last year. Has a few members from the U of R cougars. Will be looking to defend their crown.

Player to Watch

Sarah Novak is a stud. Cool and composed at all times. Great passer with tremendous vision and an impeccable work ethic. Can play all over the park and shows up when it matters. Could not ask for more.
Tegan Koroluk won the mvp last year, very skilled player that scores big goals at big times.
Tiffany Gyurek has a powerful shot, and is one of the keys to ukraine's midfield.

Poland:

Did not look very strong in the game I watched vs Ireland. Battled back in the next exhibition game against Ireland to win 2-1. If they can show such exponential improvement between every game they will win the whole thing. I mean Ireland is no pushover.

Cassandra Westerman is a composed midfielder.
Chelsey Lupastin is a force up front, that can hold up the ball well, and also score from time to time.
